Replace Shimano Dura Ace BB 7700?

I am getting a clicking sound coming from my bb when i pedal, so it seems to be asking for some attention. The question is, should i repack, replace the bearings and fuss with the 7700? Or replace with a sealed cartridge bb... and if it is choice B, should i consider the bb 7710, which is said to not be so waterproof? or just go to the bb 5500 (105)? the ultegra bb 6500 is not so available or I would probably go that way.

The bike is a 2003 Bianchi San Lorenzo.

Repack it first. I have one of these with thirty thousand miles on it and it turns as smooth as day one. It's been on 4 bikes. The waterproof thing is bullxxxx in my opinion cos any time I opened mine it was fine. It is easy to put the seals in the wrong way round or forget them.
Remember this was made in Japan when they made the best most reliable components in history.

Isn't a BB 7700 a sealed cartridge unit?

Yes, supposedly. I haven't opened mine up yet but from what i understand is that its actually a cone and cup deally that you "seal" yourself when you install it. Apparently needs somewhat frequent repacking...

They are basically caged bearings. 4 sets two each side. Check shimano tech docs for a diagram and installation.

My memory of 7700 was unpleasant, clicking common, pain to adjust, switch to ultegra if you can find one. Only DA part that I would say I did not love.

7703 (triple) is a normal sealed cartridge.

7710 (NJS track) is a normal sealed cartridge.

7700 requires adjustment and maintenance. But like most loose/caged cup cone bearings on a bike there will probably be less resistance, when properly adjusted, over a sealed cartridge.

The debate will be whether there is any noticeable impact on the performance of a bottom bracket.

As for the OP’s original question, I believe a 7710 will be fine. I’m not sure how much of an appreciable difference there is over a 105. In theory it “should” be better against the elements. I believe there is a slight weight penalty with the 7710, if that matters.

I tend to see the 7703 and 7710 Dura Ace bottom brackets more in just name, similar to Dura Ace bar end shifters, than a true race oriented design.

This might help. I thought that was too complex. https://si.shimano.com/pdfs/si/SI-1TG0H-001-ENG.pdf
