Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My Wednesday morning fun ride may be getting too popular. There are already 16 people who signed up. I usually like to keep the group 6-12 so I may have to force a split into two groups.

I posted my Zwifting set up yesterday, with the Bianchi and a dedicated trainer wheel (one of the old Fulcrum 5's I replaced when it started cracking at the spoke holes). I got a warmup in, but I noticed a shifting issue - upshifting okay, but on downshifts on the smaller cogs it would hang up for a long, LONG time - like > 10 seconds - before dropping. So I fiddled with cable tension till the upshifting was compromised and STILL it hung up on downshifts. So I thought, "Maybe it's the old cassette/newer chain?", and I put on the new wheel that had been working fine. Same thing. Worked okay - not great, but okay - on the stand, but crappy on the trainer. I even got out the dropout alignment tool I'd bought and tweaked that a bit - no difference.

So I gave up and swapped the QR fitting on the trainer for the TA fitting, swapped the TA on the Canyon rear wheel and put it on the trainer. That worked fine.

Not sure what's up with the Bianchi, but the most obvious thought is cable. I can't remember when I changed the rear derailleur cable. I guess I'll go to the LBS and pick up a full set of cables and see if that fixes it. If not, well.... ?

My Rant on here must have sped things along. Pedals arrive tomorrow, sometime after I commute out.

Made a wrong turn and ended up on a no shoulder road with an elementary school this morning. Parents, school buses and angry commuters Oh my!

I don’t think I have ever been that afraid on my bicycle. I tried sneaking up the side to bypass the school traffic, but spiteful soccer moms blocked it. 12 mins of my life I can never get back.

If any body needs some walls installed, I got you.

Same for my mental state of mind, despite the physical pain. I have bad days but I try to remember the pain will be resolved and I'm otherwise very blessed. I suppose I can learn and grow from my experience. At least that's my aspiration.

Wow, 2200 sq ft of Craftsman goodness in Palo Alto! Okay, it's Palo Alto COUNTY, in Iowa. But still!

I looked at it on the map, and it's in one of those areas where all the roads are ruler-straight and meet at right angles. Then I looked on Streetview and confirmed it - flat as flat can be. So the ONLY climbing you'd ever do would be the stairs.

From the listing. I love the last sentence.

"More photos being added soon! Diamond in the rough, this house has history, character, beauty, but you have to see beyond the dust! Imagine what this place can be - 4 bedrooms, plus a sleeping porch, 1 1/2 bath, an attic with potential. The room sizes and ceilings are phenomenal. But above all, you will not find a house with the gorgeous woodwork and unique character that this 2 story brick 1916 home has at every turn. From the moment you step foot on the porch and see the double entrance, through walking past the grand staircase, the fireplace, the window seats, and the dining room buffet. Look up and you will notice the coffered ceilings, and detailed light fixtures. Legend has it this home was built by a banker for his family, and by the looks of it, no expenses were spared. Almost a half acre on the edge of town, and an apple tree rounds out this beautiful fixer. Be Advised no utilities not livable"

There are 14 photos so far. Definitely needs some work.

Parents picking up and dropping off kids are the most aggressive drivers on the road.

I just got in from a ride through the extreme leading edge of Hurricane Lisa. RideWithGPS gave me 568 meters climbing in 33.7 km, with one climb having a 5.9% grade. It even called it a climb. Maybe taking wind into account. I did have a significant headwind.

When I rode in the mornings before work, I'd try really hard to get out the door before 7:30, because if I left even 5 minutes later, I was fighting minivans and SUVs and Volvos for two miles. The worst spot was where there's a high school and an elementary school, with a crossing in the middle of a 6' gradient. Add a little rain, and the road paint became teflon, and starting up again after being stopped was a big problem.

I wonder if zoning prevents one from living in it without utilities. It certainly can be done.

Somehow in the upgrade fever I had recently, I ended up with 3 Rival mid cage derailluers and a force mid cage derailluer for Contador. I put one on the gravel bike. And another will go one the zwifting rig. And apparently I will have a spare? Still waiting on the shifter for the zwifter, then that will get upgraded to 11 speed. Can't do the gravel bike, cassette won't fit so that will stay 10 speed.
