Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Mrs. GJ has made it clear that she doesn't want to live "in the middle of nowhere". She says she like what we have now - we're about half a mile from a mall as well as the commuter rail line that runs up and down the Peninsula. The church where she is Queen of the Altar Guild is like a 10 minute walk (because it's up a 8.6 average gradient that goes as high as 18%). Mind you, she doesn't walk to any destination all that often.

Our suburb was built right after WWII, and had been started before. It predated the big swing to car dependence in the 50s, so it was designed with at least some walkability in mind, as well as for commuters to use the rail line to get to San Francisco, where the jobs were. The farther out you go, the later things were built, and the more car-dependent the design, and sidewalks tend to disappear.

It's the same thing around Pittsburgh - there's a sweet spot, between fully urban and car-dependent suburban, where there's space, but still walkability. What I DON'T know is how "rideable" it is. I think Pittsburgh is a lot hillier than here, which is still pretty hilly (see reference to 8.6% gradient above). I suspect local cyclists there both have broader gear sets AND design their routes carefully, trading distance for elevation. I guess I'll find out! Probably need to get an ebike. Hope it doesn't asplode.

I do appreciate the sentiment, but I can't be trusted on the sport front - my brief tri/running coach fired me because fi I stepped out the door and my legs felt good, I'd rip off a Sonic run even if the schedule said "easy". That's what's crashed me on the bike, multiple times. A fat bike, though, nice and stable and slow, should discourage that and be better than driving the GX in Boulder traffic getting a dozen MPG.

I use jerseys (since I turned 70) for the airflow and the pockets. I am re-learning about them; the last one I bought new was 25+ years ago. Performance. I was hoping to be able to find vintage cut on eBay, but could not, so I just bought a size larger.

IIRC, the hills in San Francisco are steeper and shorter than the ones in Pittsburgh. I have never had any interest in riding in SF, but could (at one time) conceive of riding in Pbg

I screwed up! I should have seen this coming, I mean, it was so obviously a fail. New 11 speed Force shifter arrived today. I immediately thought, "great! I can move the 10 speed force stuff to the gravel bike....." I only purchased the right shifter. For another $29.00 I could have purchased both Rival shifters, (over the cost of 1 Force shifter) since it's on the trainer they dont need to be light. I had a nagging feeling I was missing something.
so to fix this mess I could buy a Rival left shifter for the zwifting rig, that would free up the 10 speed force groupset for use on the gravel bike. Then I'm done, I swear!

Who knew a Dura Ace BB needed an entirely different tool from Ultegra?

I did. I believe they are supposed to come with an adapter to convert the splines to fit the previous generation tool. At least that was true for 11s.

Nuh uh. The Ultegra one came with an adapter to step down from the some other standard (same as the lock rings on their brake rotors) and the damn thing didn’t even fit in the tool. 9100 is a further step smaller than that.

You could use a channel-lock wrench/pliers in a pinch.

My Colnago requires some BIG bb tool that is somewhat hard to find and even a good one will slip off every time that you try to use it.

I have watched football, then there is whatever the thing the Rams are doing this year is. They're in Tampa Bay, about to start the game. Last week they actually looked like a good pro team in the first half but in the second half they were totally inept.

Same - but that had to happen eventually. Maybe they bought that setup from the same place selling fake chains.
