Many years ago I used to ride to my NJ office. One morning I changed clothes but neglected to put on my work shoes before I made a quick trip to a nearby printer. It was very early in the a.m. so only a union clerk was in the area near my office. A couple of days later my boss told me that someone reported my lack of shoes to our chief safety officer. I had to think hard about when it might have been. The the only thing i could think of was when I went to the printer. Must have been the union clerk who ratted on me.

25 years of rock climbing and I’d definitely say socks are optional.
Climbing, never unless it’s ice.
Running, I’ve tried many times but always get blisters.
Cycling, it doesn’t seem to matter but it you go without, you’re going to look like a triathlete.

It can be a problem to go without socks for the first time. I wear the same low cut socks biking and golfing. But forgot to bring a pair to the course the other day. The shoes were fine without socks but I finished the round with bright red band of sunburn about 1/2 wide. My feet are a whole lot whiter than my legs.

Socks for sure. Having some compression and separation from the material of my shoes. To each their own but wouldn't go without 'em.

I can still remember my sophomore year of HS,68-69 school year. A Biology teacher started to rag on the wrong kid for wearing loafers without socks. After some not so friendly exchanges, they had a physical fight in front of us all. Teacher was a jerk tough guy from upstate NY with a wrestling background. Same guy was an assistant football coach that would line us up and have us run full speed towards one another to see who could get lower and tackle the other. Miraculous that no one got paralyzed, rather certain that some of us were concussed, but that wasn't a thing back then. Even more miraculous was that he kept his job. Sorry to digress, but sometimes when I wear loafers without socks ,the infamous Mr. Z comes to mind. I bike without socks about 50% of the time and, when I remember, I still feel like I'm sticking it to that A.....hole. Probably time to let it go but it's a little fun.

I used to go sockless when I was using old pre-clip-in cleated Guerciotti perforated leather cycling shoes. Never an odor issue as you should always let leather air out. Decided socks were better when some cinders got into the shoe during a climb. With new synthetic leathers, I find the air out is even more necessary, even with socks, due to more sweat.
I will not wear black socks since they remind me of when I was younger at the beginning of summer, you would see all the old guy with shorts and back dress socks. As a community service as I am now one of those guys, I will not wear black socks.

Where I am, socks are for Winter. In Summer, I usually wear footwear that, either isn't compatible with socks or, works well without them. Non-ventilated shoes are where the fungus starts so, not going to happen to me. When I do wear socks, they are always wool. Cotton socks plus badly-shaped "cycling shoes" (yeah, jam your toes into a funnel!) are probably incubators for fungus.

Since I went back to platform pedals four years ago, I wear Keene sandals. First three years sockless .The Keene sandals are waterproof and the inner soles are treated with something to resist sweat absorbing.Never notice any smell. I got tired of the tiger stripes and have been wearing a variety of cycling socks. My favorite are some merino wool blend that are ankle high.Never liked the feel of cycling shoes on bare feet.
