Addiction LXXVII

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I’ll take my chances and see a neurologist Thursday or so. I’ll alternate Tylenol and Ibu as needed til then. If I’m lucky it may even go away as it usually does for the rest of the year.
I am glad you escaped.

Feel free to not respond, but what "neruological" concerns did urgent care find that made them push the panic button??

BTW I closely follow the influenza reports that the CDC and my state health dept put out weekly, and the influenza activity in the Northeast is very high this past week and likely peaking this week or next week. I am not surprised if the ER and urgent care places are inundated with sick people above and beyond their usual background numbers.

Do they give any word on if it's the expected strains covered by the vaccine or if it's from left field?

Get better, Billy. If anyone is going to get stabbed with an ice pick, it should at least come with an early 90's Sharon Stone.

I understand your frustration with the ER hope the problem is resolved and you feel better.

She didn’t specify, I think she considered there were too many possibilities for her to pursue. Plus, when you state your pain level is a 9 that probably pushes some buttons. At the ER, both the PA and triage nurse said the fact I stated this was the worst headache I ever had was a red flag for them. Yet as the hours slipped by I had regrets that calling it a headache at all may have pushed me to the back burner.

I had to get out of there, the place was depressing yet the staff kept plowing ahead doing their job. Much props to those folks and their professionalism. I’m going to write a letter of praise.

EDIT: My bad, the UC doctor did have a specific concern of an aneurysm. I forgot that.

Billy, I would have done the same thing, but sooner. The only rationale for a non-contrast CT scan of the head is to rule out a brain hemorrhage and your symptoms, plus the fact that you have had the same thing in the past strongly suggested something else.

My unsolicited advice would be to pick the academic center in NYC that’s the least onerous to get to (almost certainly Columbia) and make an appointment at their headache clinic in order to be armed for the next cluster.

Yeah, that’s what they were thinking. Any half-way affirmative answer to “is this the worst headache of your life?” buys you that CT. These people are forced to think in very crude ways and have an action bias.

They say most cases are strains that are in the vaccine.

We have 3 Canadians at my new work. I'm gonna have to ask them what they were thinking.

My theory is that they all hate the cold weather, since they all dress PHX style: 70°, time to put on a hoodie

Much as I hate to say it, and his suffering notwithstanding, there was nothing really wrong with the care BillyD received and no emergency medicine system in the world is prepared to deal with headache intelligently.

Edit: I now guess you were referring to the state of the ER and yes, that is a shame and the product of a horribly dysfunctional system.

Also so many folks were traveling over the holidays and had no access to their usual practitioners. Hence the crowds at emergency rooms, urgent care centers and pharmacy clinics.
