Addiction 2022.2

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

They are not particularly fast, and do not really appeal to the person looking for a fast performance car (e.g. Porsche Boxster or more types). But, they are quick, fast enough, and very engaging to drive. In fact, in my mind, a well-handling car that has modest horsepower can be much more fun to drive than a very powerful car because you don't have to worry so much about it getting out of hand or getting in trouble with the law.

I'd get her the Miata in a heart beat if she really wants it. It comes with a stick or automatic, but I'd recommend the stick if she can drive it or learn to drive it. It's not a "practical" car in terms of carrying capacity, but no two-seat car is. There is room for groceries in the trunk and you can always put more on the passenger floor and seat (I have personal experience with that). Being a cautious driver will not prevent her from having fun with it.

They are also reasonable to maintain and reliable.

I'd imagine it would put a big smile on her face, and that's what you are really after, isn't it?

I wouldn't wait for the Saturn to die either. It's served its duty.
Understood. Will consider. She is NOT mechanically adept and never got the hang of a stick-shift, so cue up R.E.M. "Automatic for the People."

Will investigate. The new and used care market is not exactly a buyer's market these days.

If you looking around that year, the 2004/5 Mazdaspeed Miata is the only turbo version ever. Zoom Zoom.

No explanation needed. If people insist on continuing to end up in a crumpled, writhing mass of pain on the gravels, there's nothing I can do about it.

That said, I wonder how practical a Miata is for her since she is a very cautious driver and I suspect this car caters to a performance-minded driver.

Thoughts? She does have a birthday in August, so wheels in my head are spinning......
Are we talking a newer Miata? The new ones are quite tame and comfortable. The older ones are loud and very much not so.

Also, you would probably never want to be a passenger in it, even in the newer ones. They are not built even really for 6'+, even the new ones as I understand.

What specifically is your aversion? Fear of injury? 99% of the time around here the only difference from paved road riding is you need to take descents a littler more carefully and climbs are a little tougher.

I know. The side panels are plastic. The hood and trunk are metal, and can sometimes rust. And the underbody obviously can rust.

Echo Cardiogram Achievement Unlocked!

I DO have a heart, it beats slowly, and works as advertised. very slight mitral and aortic valve leakages. Nothing to write home about, but of course I did, just to reassure Mrs. GeneJockey.

2019. Seriously. The best Miata engine ever if you want used.

If Miatas existed when I bought my first car, that's what I'd have gotten instead of the MGB. Probably. They're like MGs that work reliably. And putting up the top is not a multi-step process involving putting together the frame, then stretching the top over it, then snapping a dozen snaps, then clamping the header to the windscreen frame.

Does that mean it’s inexplicable?

I see it as an extreme sport which has detoured from what the masses consider traditional cycling. Let’s be honest, It’s fine for those who get a kick out of taking risks, but single track style mountain biking, or even cyclecross, are not the activities most folks think of when the term cycling comes to mind.

Yeah, but what most folks think of when cycling comes to mind is idiots blowing through red lights in front of them so they have to hit the brakes, and then the rider flips them off. At least, that's what everybody says in the comments under any article about cyclists being run over by cars or trucks.
