This youtube video also lists RetroDecals as a possible source. Sorry, the actual link wasn't working for some reason.

Bikes: Wow, where to start? A collection of 1980's and early 90's road, touring, and MTBs from the likes of Trek, Schwinn, Cannondale, Fuji, Miyata, Univega, Panasonic, and GT. It has gotten rather out of control.

I am a sucker for black & gold. Always wanted to find one of these early Mt. Hoods since they were originally named Force 1, the bike Ross rolled out in 1983 as their first mountain bike. Ross also sponsored the first formal mountain bike team, the Ross Indians. Some great history there. This is a 22" 1984 Ross Mt. Hood.

Agreed, just took the dog to the vet, and came home with an '87 Marin Bear Mountain. I need this like a proverbial hole in the head.

Are those Flagg cranksets still worth mint these days? It is bonkers what the parts prices have risen to these days. I swear I have some bikes where one part is worth 5 times the value of the entire bike.

That's a voracious dog; usually they just swallow Christmas ornaments or socks or something.....

LOL, sorry, it's actually a Bear Valley, and no, it was my doing, not the dog's. But I can't let a nice vintage filet-brazed frame alone.

For the two builds I used them on, they are perfect. I still prefer tan-, or "skin-wall" tires, like the Maxxis DTHs. But these came as a pair, along with a pair of tubes, rim strips, and tire irons, for less than $60. Can't beat that for value. And they ride smooth as buttah!

Agreed and not normally a fan of billboards, especially really big ones, these somehow get a pass, font, style and BEASTERN seem to work pretty well.

Can't argue with that many boxes checked.

Yeah, it's kind of a NASCAR vibe, isn't it? A Hot Rod Trek.

I'm interested in picking up something vintage and mountain-y. Found these two candidates nearby, anyone willing to loan their eyes to help guess year and size?

Trek 970

Trek 8-something... - the ad says 880 but I don't think there was an 880

Thanks!

First one is about an 18" and dates to the mid-90's, needs an overhaul but appears to have an 8-speed XT drive line, second is pretty cool, early bull-moose bars and relaxed geometry make it around 1985. Looks fairly complete as well.

No idea on model and no matter anyway, if the small blue one will fit, I would beat feet as it has bullmoose bars, Reynolds 5XX and a lugged crown fork, all very scarce now days on a Trek or anything else for that matter. It would be at least a $500 ask here in PDX, run, don't walk IMO.

Do you have to pick only one? They're both pretty awesome.
Vintage Trek puts the 970 in 1993, the Antelope is maybe an 850 from 1987. Check them both out; the one you don't want to give back is the right one. Good luck.

The last year for Reynolds tubing on the ATBs was 1984. So that's probably an '84 with an '85 paint/decal makeover (which is not unheard-of with Treks of that time). Might possibly be an 890. But those components don't match any ATB models from '83-'85. So although they may be cool components, they're not original.

The 970 was the top of Trek's 1993 line (not including the beer cans).

Red one is more modern is useful ways, cassette wheel, threadless steerer. And in one that isn't good (STI shifters not thumbies). The XT parts on it are truely excellent. Basically the best derailer ever. I also think that generation of canti brakes is excellent. It's a high spec bike. It's also got dead tires, a rusty chain. It's a project likely warranting a complete strip and rebuild. But worth it.

The blue one has a freewheel. Oldschool cantis. No indexing (?) It's vintage, not classic. 80s not 90s. It's cooler. It's also got that long wheelbase, and slack angles. Far more upright bars (though the other can easily be modified to that) It's a better cruiser. Probably more fun to mess about on. The other one would be better as a fast whip on forest trails. And it's probably in better condition considering that it has new schwalbe tires on it. However, personally I quite dislike marathons, and think bikes like this deserve something suppler and riding better, so would not be happy about paying for new tires i don't want on a bike.

I would love them both but for different purposes. I think it comes down to can you stomach the red. And do you want to go fast. I quite like red bikes when they're -really- classy. That one, with its lugs and XT, could be, it's not now, now, imo, it's pretty hideous, and the blue one is gorgeous.

My 11 y/o is looking for a little freedom and wants to start riding a bike to school. He has a very decent BMX bike but dad (me) isn’t too hip on him slinging his 18 lb backpack on his back and pedaling away on one speed. In the usual n+1 mindset I thought a multi-speed something would be better for him.
NOT EASY finding a decent MTB in his size even though they are a dime a dozen around here. A little scouring on Marketplace and CL and….

26” wheels, 3x7 grip shift (works for him), provisions for mounting a rear rack, steel (YAY!), it’s only been ridden about a dozen times and since it’s XS it was a lofty $80. Best part, he LOVES this thing!! He couldn’t stop smiling while riding it. I sanded the rear pads and they seem to work well now but I envision KoolStops soon. Tires may swapped for something more appropriate for the street but he doesn’t seem to care. I’m really looking forward to rides with him, maybe starting this afternoon!

Agreed Ken. For some reason my luck with finding decent MTBs for little $$ is much better than finding road bikes for similar $$. One would think most older MTBs would be thrashed to bits but the opposite seems true in these parts. I grabbed a bike headed for the dump that included an extra set of tires and tubes and it only needed some light maintenance. I love free!

Is it these? They would probably look good on my new-to-me Hardrock that's coming. https://easternbikes.com/collections...-yellow-2-pack
