de Rosa fans......what it the holy grail, de Rosa wise

a long time ago I decided that since I would never spring for a Ferrari even in the event i could, someday I would have a hot Italian bike. Recently I settled on the idea of targeting a de Rosa, mainly from the passion shown here and to reduce the options. So despite not really having time, money for a project at this time and really just needing to ride more, I still want a grail to think about.

I like classic bikes, steel frame and fork quill stems. The vision is sexy red italian with modern campy (preferably aluminum, not carbon) components.

What models, years should I think about, lust after, watch for? Should I consider a Neo Primato and just look for the best looking threadless stem i can find?

thanks,

ps my Miyata is 58 cm so I am guessing that is the size i should be looking for

To me, the "perfect" De Rosa (and I've owned one, and they are a beautiful ride) is a Neo Primato in white with red Faema livery.

Why pay a premium for a name when you're not really sure why you want it (beyond the passion of others and to "reduce the options")? I would suggest figuring out why you really want a De Rosa, since you're generally going to pay more for one.

Feh. The Primato/Neo Premato are pale imitations of the real thing. Give me a 70's-vintage DeRosa Professional, in blood red, white decals, white tape, white housing, white saddle, reduced Super Record gruppo, Mavic GEL rims and hand-made cotton tubies. Like this:

Now, THAT is a DeRosa! (Tho' it SHOULD have the flat-top crown, not that sloping "thing")

I'm just saying, learn why you want it - especially if it comes with a premium. Otherwise, what's the point?

I would personally love to have a Primato - but I know why I want one, and why I like other eras of De Rosa more. I'm just snarky these days when it comes to name-chasing.

I mean, come on - how can it be a "grail" when you don't even know why it's a grail? What if your "grail" turns out to be a Dixie cup in 6 months?

The "real thing" has pressed lugs and took an age to file - which rules out the bike in the photo completely. Just sayin'.

Sometimes it isn't Grail until you've ridden it, or seen it.
We can't tell you what Grail is for you.
For me, the mantra is N+1 - and hope for good outcomes.

The OP is probably not buying at this time (though 58cm Primato's in nice shape don't show up everyday), buts wants a 'grail to think about'.

In the meantime, I'll offer him a pic or two of a decidedly inferior cast lug bike for him to contemplate

Sheesh, OFG, you really DID trot out one of your clunkers! Don't you still have that nice Fuji, or the Nishiki, or the Peugeot to show off? Always with those cheapo Italians ... Hmph!

Let's see here folks.

We have three at the moment including my wife's Primato that she raced last season.

Not quite up to OFG's level, but a keeper, no doubt.

My red SLX is the best fitting bike I have. Love that bike. That one will never leave.

...and no the DA will not come off. Not till it wears out, and then I have a Super Record gruppo sitting here.

That'll be a while I'd reckon.

and then finally, a 35th Anniversario.

Last time I posted a pic of her, a bike nerd pointed out it had the wrong Campy calipers, and I was crabby for two days.

Think I'll pass on that opportunity to post her again.

I buy De Rosas because they are incredible riders.

I'll get around to a Titanio or an EL-OS Primato one of these years.

I'm most interested in a Titiano or Primato personally. I owned a professional, and while a nice bike...it didn't thrill me as much as I remembered being thrilled by the first De Rosa I rode (a 1987 Signature, essentially a special edition Professional). In the end I let it go because it was an orange Italian and two orange Italians was excessive.

My Primato is on the short list of bikes I won't sell ever. I heard over and over OFG talk about the De Rosa's ride. I guess it sunk in when one mine size came up for sale the second time. The first time I wanted it, but didn't have the money. The second time I didnt let it get away.

This was just after the initial build. The bars have been rotated down, switched to some Look road pedals, and some different wheels since the pictures.

I'm a rider first, though I can't say I've ridden every bike I own a lot. I ride a lot, but I also have a lot of bikes... My goal is to try out all sorts of bikes and keep the ones that I turn out really liking. Grail doesnt really come into the equation.

Maybe the real question should be:

"What bike should I buy that would make you fellas on the internet most jealous and impressed by my bike buying skills?"

Right now I'd be drooling most over something Reynolds 953...maybe a Kirk Terraplane. Tom Kellog is always drool worthy.

Aesthetically, I love the Faema paintjobs. Something about the white and red.

This one is pretty cool for its funky uniqueness:
