I'll get a liter of 75W90 gear oil.

I wonder if the fact that the wheel stops spinning after just 5-6 seconds after one revolution of the crank by hand vs. ~15s on my big bike isn't simply/also due to the fact that the Nexus is on a Brompton, ie. 16" wheel instead of 26/28" → less inertia.

75W-140 works equally well; the "140" part doesn't apply to parts that don't run hot.
That said, I *was* originally looking for 75W-90, but I couldn't find it on the shelf anywhere I looked.

There was no 75W90/140 gear oil in the shop, but there was ATF… which I used to give the SG-8R31 a bath.

And… it makes zero difference: In either speed 4/5, after giving one revolution of the crank by hand, the wheel still stops spinning after about 5-6 seconds.

If I get the opportunity, I'll ask a Brompton rider if an SG-C60xx (00, 01, 10, 11) offers less friction and is worth the expense + rebuilding a wheel… or it's just what happens when you stick it into a 16" wheel.

Out of curiosity, is it possible to just replace the plain bearings found in lower-end Nexus with needle bearings found in higher-end Nexus, or at worst, change the bearings + gears?

Are the dimensions identical, so it's plug and play and I could keep the rest of the hub?
