Gear switch not snapping back

I had to switch my gear cable and it works fine, except that when I click the lower switch to change to a lighter gear, it doesn't snap back like it used to so I have to do it manually.
Can someone tell me why? I'm wondering if there was a spring inside the gear switch casing, maybe I lost it?

You did it wrong? Honestly with so little information about what type of shifter you have it's just a guess. Did you make sure the shifter was in high gear position before putting the new cable in?

No, I didn't know I had to do that.

Installing a cable shouldn't make springs fall out. My guess would be an error in the cable installation or the shifter needs to be flushed.

I would guess he thinks the shifter needs to be sprayed/soaked with a degreaser to wash out any buildup that may be gumming up the works.

Try making sure the shifter is on the highest (smallest) gear and re-adjusting the cable before you try that...

It turns out all I had to do was unscrew that little screw in the middle of the picture a bit. It was simply too tight and somehow getting in the way of the swtich. Easy fix!
