Yes... there is a collar about 10cm deep. Did you actually remove the collar? It definitely seem brazed in there. I'm not surprised the seatpost wasn't stuck with a spacious gap around it for 90% of the post.

I did remove the collar. I don't recall it being quite so deep, but I didn't measure it and was a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.

The o.d. of the tube is only 28mm. A 26mm post would mean that the tube walls are 1mm. That's too thin for high tension steel

I thought I'd bump this thread with some recent pics of my '72 UO-8 which is now sporting a triple chainring set. I recently acquired a vintage Cyclo 52-46-36T which was optional on UO-8's back in those days.

Great looking bike... Has it been repainted? My UO10 has so much faded and scratched paint, I used an entire vial of Testor's model paint.

Also the wheels appear to be original.

Thanks ... The paint is original and it has it's share of touched up blemishes but it does show fairly well considering it's age. Yes, the wheels are the correct Rigida Chrolux in excellent condition. Cleaning the brake rubber off of those wheels is a real PITA.

What I am lacking are the correct Simplex QR skewers with the fragile plastic wing nuts. I'm currently on the lookout for a set which I hoping to find at a reasonable price.

I looked for a reasonably priced set of those for months. I fianally gave up and bought an unreasonably priced set. Be sure they are complete. There should be a tiny spring just under the plastic wingnut.

I'll probably end up doing the same but I'm having a tough time rationalizing the spending of considerable bucks on a set of skewers for a UO-8. I still have one of the original skewers with the small spring and the brass nut but the wing nut fragments are long gone. I've even contemplated trying to make new ones using one of those plastic mold kits but of course, one has to have an intact wing nut in order to create the mold.

Finally got mine out on the road. The headset is indexed, but could seem to find one, so, for now, just took the cups out, rotated them and re-installed. Lots of touch-up paint. But other parts surprisingly functional. I've been doing some close-to-home trips with it and find it a rather nice ride.

The ride is very different. I'm a little put off seeing the front wheel skewers so "out there"!
However, the ride is comfortable and it also accelerates pretty good for an old hi-ten bike.

I reserve judgement on whether I like it or not. It took me a while to get used to my Mercier and now it's my favorite ride.

Gotta ask if you've had to deal with the headset problem. Anyone use the Velo Orange French headset on one of these models? Seems to me that the stack height is too much... at 41mm.

Here's my latest addition to my collection, a '73 UO-18. Picked this up a couple of weeks ago for $30. Story is that the Peugeot, along with an early 70's Gitane and a Raleigh, had been in a sealed storage locker for the past thirty years. All three bikes are now in my possession.

The UO-18 is in amazing condition, paint and decals are beautiful, tires are in good condition, no signs of dry rot and the saddle is like new. Only defect I found is that the right hand nylon brake lever is missing the ball shaped end. A previous owner replaced the Simplex derailleurs with Suntour units.

Here's some as found pictures of today's score. It appears to be a 1973-1974 U08 in my favorite color. I drove an hour and a half round trip, but the price was very good. I'm planning on upgrading the cranks to cotterless using Action French cups, also considering going to aluminum 700c wheels with 35mm Paselas. The rear derailleur is in good shape, just going to change to Suntour pulleys. The front derailleur clamp is cracked, but a NOS replacement was given to me by the seller. Also included was the original owners manual, cool. The pump doesn't work too well, does anyone know if rebuild kits are available? After pics to follow.

likebike23, that appears to have been ridden very little. I think the tires are original. Changing the wheels and tires will be very nice. Changing the crank would be nice, but not as big an improvement. I think I have toe clips for those pedals if you're interested. They're very durable pedals. The brakes take some work to get working just right, but they are superb brakes.

I like the color, too!

@likebike23: Pump rebuild kits (or donor pumps) can sometimes be found, but probably are not necessary. As long as nothing is broken inside, you can rejuvenate your pump. Open it up, and look for the leather washer/seal. Flair the edges out so that it makes better contact with the inside walls of the shaft, and also add some thick grease or Vaseline.

I agree that an alloy wheelset is a sensible first upgrade. Keep the original wheels in storage in case you sell the bike. The original wheels are 27", but you have enough brake reach accommodate 700c wheels, giving you a much greater variety of tire options.

Btw, you can also rejuvenate the black Simplex delrin bits with Vaseline. Delrin often fades to a dull grey, but rubbing a tiny dab of vaseline on Delrin brings back a nice deep black luster.

I picked up this orange beauty last fall but haven't yet had a chance to tidy it up - new tires, cables, grease, etc. - or take it for a ride. I do however think it needs a new pump like so may of these other pugs are sporting. What is the brand that @likebike23 and others have?

So I started disassembly and cleaning and ran into a couple of problems. First, one of the seat lug ears is cracked due to over tightening. I don't completely blame the previous owner for that one. It has a chrome seatpost that is shimmed and the size of the brake cable guide on the binder bolt doesn't help with tightening it down. The crack follows where the cable guide was. I removed the post/shim and slid a 25.6mm alloy post in there, fits perfect. Second, the chain stays were crushed a bit by the kickstand, and it wasn't even that tight. I'll chalk that up to the strength of the tubing. Not a huge deal, I'll just ride it as is and deal with the seat binder if it becomes impossible to tighten the post.

@noglider: thanks for the offer, but after messing about with those cotters, my choice to go cotterless was reinforced.
@gaucho777: thanks for the tips, I'll try the Vaseline (on the bike that is).
@Stevensb: Nice bike! The paint is much better than mine. The pump is a ventolux, what are you using?
