Vintage MTB cooled up for an 11 year old
Was able to find another recipient of the slowly diminishing mass of bikes. A friend’s daughter is 11 and 5’0” already.
MTBs tens to be flexible so I thought she would like one but a little souped up.
Switched out the wrist shifters for a ratcheting set, shined up and greased everything. Paint was matte finish...I turned into semi gloss with polish and wax.
Rose gold paint for the handlebar, stem, bottle cage, then used some similar nail polish to paint the ratty chain stay guard. New cables, tires, brakes adjusted and ready.
apparently she thought it was super cool when her mom shares the picture with her.
New saddle to match a bit.
I think the rose gold is sorta cool...
Nail polish is pretty useful...though the smell does a number on my brain cells.

My 11 y/o is 5’ tall and I’m trying to talk him off his BMX bike but no luck yet. He has a gift for crashing on that thing. 😬 I would love to get him on a MTB but he tells me he already has a bike. N+1 has not infected him yet.

The Huffy I made 1.5 years ago in the first round had painted fenders and chain guard and it was popular even among the guys, even though there were choices of much better bikes. Something about the gold.

Thank you, PB! I have fun when it is for a specific person and I want to give it a unique twist without re-painting the whole thing. The fact that an 11 year old kept liking my ideas was pretty cool.
I think when I eventually get to those Domino's pizza single speed bikes, I will have a blast. I am thinking of each being a different fruit.
I never got around to the Trek 420, Schwinn Super Le Tour and I have two more single speeds to play with. Might have to wait for the end of the school year/my retirement.

that "rose gold" paint is super-cool, in a girl-y way.
I have taken to making "home-brew" chain stay guards with heavy aluminum ducting tape and a pattern from an old SS one, if I think the single layer might not hold up I add a second.
Never tried spraying one and I usually rub them vigorously ("burnishing") to make sure they go on smooth and stay stuck, so maybe paint would not practical...but one way to find out!

Okay, I will oblige.
Might take a few days cause I'm slow on the shutter, but these are not any earth shakers: they look like all the early stainless steel stick-on protectors except maybe a little more dull.
I started trying this tape cause you can't find the SS jobs anymore!

Exactly why this is so interesting! Looking forward to pics.
@jdawginsc the bike looks great! All that much more rewarding when the "customer" is so excited about the bike.

If he's that hard on his bike, do you really want to put him on anything more expensive?

Naw. Dad doesn't have to keep charging forward like a jerk. He just needs to ride far enough that the suggestion of a lighter bike and one better suited to something different is more of a revelation. I have a 13-year-old boy and most times I have to show him, rather than just telling him.

She apparently gave it the thumbs up according to her mom, so whoop whoop.

Maybe a 24" wheel BMX would fit him better and take more of a beating. In the 80s and 90s when I was in the bike field, they weren't too common, but I think you can still get them - maybe even a cool vintage one!

That's what I was thinking! He might even be into one of those newer 26" "BMX" bikes (SE has a lot of cool options) or an old 29" Monocog single speed.

Good gravy! With a ride like that, I don't blame him! He'll get bike-curious soon enough, just enjoy him.
Fair point. His BMX bike isn’t a cheap department store bike. I wouldn’t do that to him! Redline Pro-line Expert that I bought used and blinged it up with a Charge Spoon saddle, oil slick stem and new Tektro linear pull brakes. I stripped the horribly rashed paint and the frame is still raw aluminum. The 48 spoke wheels are indestructible. I swapped the tires out last week.

jdawginsc , this one looks great. I'm sure she'll have a blast on the thing. Being relatively puny, myself, it looks roughly the size of what I tend to ride. I don't see many "puny" rides around, these days.

I don’t want to think about the amount of hours I have stripping the frame. Labor of love.
