Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hey SoCal people, we are looking at location options for our stay. One idea is to stay in Santa Monica, I see there is a rail line that goes from there to USC (the E line) so if we need to go back/forth that makes it easier than driving. We actually want to avoid having a car or car rental during our stay. It also looks like good cycling options just West of there.

Comments? Where is Heathpack when I need her??

Hmmm, I haven't even seen her on Strava, but I only look at the most recent 5 rides on the feed usually.

I’m not sure about the travel between Santa Monica and USC, but the riding west of there is excellent, with lots of options. The traffic in Santa Monica can be a bit heavy, but once you get out to Malibu, it improves a lot.

just a dig a the Healthcare industry in general. Even at the micro-Doctor level the care is quite often mediocre. Probably due to the way they are compensated. This seems especially true in my experience with specialists. I will attest that my primary care physician is fantastic. Chick Fil-A (@datlas level) customer service.

It's nice to be home, but damn this weather - mid-40s, overcast, and still windy as all get-out. I will say, though, it was nice that, FOR ONCE, my out-in-to-a-headwind-in-the-hopes-of-a-tailwind-back actually worked out.

It's hard for me to resist runnin' with a good tailwind and I ended up missing the KOM on a 3.5mile segment by 1 freakin' second. Now, if I were a *serious* Strava cyclist, I could flag that other ride and the KOM would be mine - that guy indicates that he was drafting off of a cement truck, and vehicle pacing is verboten... but I don't care about KOMs that much.

Been working on the loft all day with my dad. I’d say were about 50 percent done. Had to take down the old shelving unit before we could start.

Tomorrow we will put the supports up for the loft and the ply wood flooring down.

Then all this junk can go up there.

We've had rain for two straight days so today, I finally cleaned two bikes and two trikes, including the chains and then mounted a tubeless 700c on one of the trikes. My work is done for the day even though there are two more machines that could use some cleaning, too, but they can wait.

That rain was a pain in the butt for me on the interstate yesterday, when traveling through your neck of the woods. Really windy, ton of road spray from wheels and a frustrating number of people without their lights on - it was pretty tough to see, at times. Oh, and I'm now convinced that WI is the epicenter for drivers parking in the left lane/avoiding the right lane at all costs, so the closer we got to WI, the worse that got, too, which didn't help things, either.

Just got back from ~55 miles on the Circuit. It was lots of fun, except maybe when I ran out of gears which happened A LOT. I'm wondering whether 1) Shimano ever made the Biopace rings in 53/39, and 2) how big a biggest cog can I put on the back? The derailleur is one of those late 80s jobbies with a real short cage. But there weren't any hills on the ride that weren't "doable", and that's with almost 3300 feet of climbing over the 55 miles, per Strava. I would NOT want to take it on any of the 30-60 minute climbs hereabouts, though!

Santa Monica might be your best bet for proximity to USC. I can ask my friend who lives there about some of the local rides she does and if she has any insight about where to stay.
For me, riding anywhere south of the Santa Monica mountains sucks. Some people like to ride down to Palos Verdes and some of it is nice but you have to be ready to deal with 1000s of cars. Even getting from Santa Monica to the S.M. mountains involves traffic, but is doable if you know the right routes. People like to ride on Pacific Coast Highway but I avoid it, especially near the city. If you are near UCLA, there are twisty mountain roads you can use to climb up into the mountains, though that part is crowded and packed with houses.
To me, the jewel of the area is the part of the S.M. mountains north and west of Topanga Canyon. That's where the quiet, beautiful roads are and I still love riding there after 30+ years.
If you come out and are looking for a nice ride, I would be happy to show you some of my happy places. If it's August, it might be hot.

That's the only reason to ride near the coast. As soon as you go inland the temp goes up. Sometimes, way up. That's why I like to go up to elevation.

Today I rode from home for a few hours. I rode through a stop sign and heard a cop blip his siren behind me. Crap, where did he come from. He didn't pull me over, maybe just wanted to warn me. Later, I stopped for a red and there was a disheveled woman sitting on the base of a sign drinking a 16oz Budweiser and screaming about being homeless and something else. She turned to 2 other people near her and shouted "STFU" and went back into her rant at nobody in particular.

Back on residential streets I noticed a police helicopter circling overhead and heard sirens. A motorcycle flew by and I thought they might be chasing him. A couple blocks later police cars were flying by with sirens blaring. Never found out what was up.

There is a short section of mup I use to access the dam to ride to a different neighborhood. A guy was spinning around as if he was doing some form of martial art and wasn't looking and spun into my path. I had to stop or I would have hit him. Weird.

After that I was on a wide street and I almost ran over a potato bug. He was about 3 inches long and was running very fast toward the curb and I had to swerve to keep from getting him. I rarely see them and this is the first time I almost hit one on the road. Weird.

I like to go up the canyon where I used to live and take a break in the park there. As I was leaving the park an old friend from the road club recognized me from his car and we had a lovely chat for a while. So that was nice.
