Mavic CXP-30 rims
I have a set of Mavic CXP-30 rims in excellent shape. Are they worth building a set of wheels with? I was going to have them laced to some older Chorus 32 hole hubs for an extra set of wheels. Thanks

Any Mavic rim "in excellent shape" is worth building into a wheel, particularly if you already have a good set of hubs.

Heavy but bombproof. Good beater wheels. I wouldn't put a ton into a new build, but they'll be sturdy as about anything out there. I just had an old set rebuilt with the original hubs. They'll go on the crossenstein bike.

Just rebuilt mine with 9 speed DA, but they were also the stock hubs. If you've already got a set of older hubs, why not? Who cares what they look like as long as they work in the wet/slop.

Well, I laced mine with Record, and I have four sets of them - 2 clinchers/2 tubies - IMHO there was never, ever a better training rim. They're heavy, right? ...but isn't that what you want in a trainer? Almost INDESTRUCTABLE! A heavier friend of mine kept popping spokes. Every year he had to stop a ride or send a wheel to the shop for fixing/replacement. I lent him a set of mine 2 years ago and he's still riding them. What's more, they're gorgeous! Ti (gold colour) finish. I know this is an old, OLD thread, but it's still relevant today, even in the world of the super-light wheeels... I'm also riding SC SSL's and love 'em too...

At that weight, it's total overkill on the front.

cs1, I remember that for a long time the CXP30 was the darling of the century and double century riders in my area where the emphasis is on reliability, some aero benefit and there's little change in speed. I still see them once in awhile as with that type of use, they last seemingly forever.

Yesterday I did a 50 mile ride with almost a mile of elevation gain and they handled well, as always. The semi-aero profile is also nice to have and you can feel it when you're pushing in the flat at higher speeds.
I think these are the best training wheels period.

For Cyclocross the peaked shape wont hold mud like a flatter may, and they'd make a good steering rudder when it gets deep.

Do you own the hubs and do you need a spare wheel set?
From a pure cash flow basis it probably isn't worth doing but, like lots of guys, I like to build wheels. I'd do it in a heartbeat.
Anybody want to buy a set of lightly used Open Pro's laced to brand new Tiagra hubs?

Heavy, but tank-proof. I just built a wheel-set using H+Son SL42's which make the CXP30's look like feather-weights!

I had a set and honestly I couldn't tell they were heavy but after reading the thread I felt confident rolling over anything.
Bottom line great wheels definitely worth having or building.
Maybe this will be the last post for the next ten years.

Cyclocross use, their peak wont collect mud like box section rims.. can..
and may make a front rudder when its deep.

Still going (both wheelset and thread!)
I'm still using my set bought used in 1998...Mavic hub up front/Shimano 600 8-speed rear. Light gravel grinding, road, single trails: piece of cake for them; wouldn't trade them!
