Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Wore out my first GP4000S

I made the switch last year to 25mm GP4000S tires, and just finished wearing out the first one.

1037 miles up front, then 5257 miles in back until the first cords showed. Twice the life of GP 4 seasons, about like Gatorskins. I definitely got my money's worth.

Moved the front with 5257 miles to the back and installed a new GP4000SII.

Good tires. Curious, how many miles did you get in AFTER the wear indicators were gone?

They are good tires. I got 7500 miles on mine before I could no longer see the wear indicators. I rode them for a while after that, but started getting flats...road debris was getting thru the thin rubber.

I switched to Rubino Pro Slick IIIs last July because I got four of them for $105 shipped. They seem to be even cheaper now.

About 250-400 - the wear indicators just finished disappearing 2-3 weeks ago.

I've yet to wear one out but I've lost 3 or 4 to cuts. Great tires. I'm now trying the new GP GT (25mm only) with hopes it will be a little more sturdy.

Over 6k miles, damn!!! I think I have to change mine about ever 1500 or so. Of course, some of those had some skids on them, had to lock up the brakes a couple of times.

How do you like the Rubino Pro Slick IIIs compared to the GP4000s ? (Did you have the 4000S or the 4000s2 ?)

I can comment on both Vittorias and Contis:

Vittorias roll very well but wear out fast and puncture too soon. I've ran Rubino pros and have CX Corsas to race on.

Conti's are durable, roll good but are a ***** to mount. I'm not the weakest guy out there but not the strongest neither but these things are tough as nails. When I mount Vittorias they're like bubble gum soft.

I just changed my rear GP4000SII. It looked very similar to the OP's with threads showing through. After switching from 23's to 25's, I've noticed an increase in mileage. I've had no problem in mounting this tire onto Zipps or other wheels.

Any difference to you in going from 23 to 25?

(FWIW, I'm running the regular Grand Prix and I really like them. They don't have the puncture protection of the 4000S but I've had only 1 flat in 4 months & 1,200 miles and it was a pinch, not a puncture so very pleased!)

Since you can run the 25's at a lower pressure, you should have a slightly smoother ride and a lower probability of pinch flats. I normally run the 23's at 120 psi and the 25's at about 110 psi.

I use 1 mil Kapton tape. Two wraps measure about .005" (there's another .0015" of adhesive) versus .020" for Velotape and .010" for very thin rim strips like Rox. That extra slack makes the difference between mounting Contis on tight rims (Kinlin XR300, Velocity Fusion) by hand and cussing at tire levers. It's the least expensive and lightest tape. Comes off easy. Available in 16mm (5/8") for retro-grouches like me running narrow rims and 19mm for new fangled wheels.

My wear marks go down to the canvas. Don't think I'll wait that long.

Thanks! Although I like them a lot, I always felt like the Rubino pros were a bit soft, especially after a session on the trainer. I know, I know, you're not really supposed to use them on a trainer, but a couple of times i was in situations where I didn't have the time to swap the tire (this was for hard trainer workouts. No big deal for warmups/recoveries, etc.). After a couple of heat cycles, the rear tire would feel extremely flexy, and the rear of the bike would quite soft, even if the pressure was correct. I know it wasn't the frame, either, as I ride a Fuji SST (which is known for being quite stiff).

I had the GP4000s, 23mm.

I have 3,667 miles on the Rubinos now, and I like them a lot. I haven't had any pinch flats or flats from road debris, and there was plenty of that this winter.

I can't tell any difference between the two tires when just rolling along, but I do feel more confident in fast cornering with the Rubinos. I'm still running 23s on Boyd Vitesse rims.

I'm getting about 2000 kms out of a GP4000s. They seem to puncture to easy after that.
The last race of the season I flatted on a 2000 km tire and got a DNF. And I was winning!
Fresh set going on soon for this season.

Good job on wearing out your tires. It's a feat for sure. I usually swap out my tires each year. I've only ridden road two years so I guess I've done that the past two years. They look fine with 5-6k on them but I just don't like how they look squared off.

Merlin has the 23mm Conti's on sale for ~$74 USD per pair, with 2 free tubes (and free shipping). Around $4 more for the 25mm.

Pair Continental GP4000 S II Folding Tyres with 2 Free Inner Tubes - 700c | Merlin Cycles

Once they become squared off and the wear indicators gone, keep a close eye on threads appearing after each ride, especially if you've skidded a time or two. Also, carefully inspect for glass or anything embedded in the tire, since at this point the tire is more prone to flatting.

The wear indicators are the two divots in the 'tread' of the tire, right? I'm watching mine, and thinking I replace them too soon. How shallow do you all let those wear indicators get (if I'm correct that those are the wear indicators)? Do most of you let the wear all the way out? Seems like asking for trouble to me. I've also been one of those that replaces each year (5k to 7k miles per year).
