Good frame gone bad
(I also posted some pics in the Wacky CL thread)
I picked up this heap yesterday to strip its D-A bits and what was done to the frame is one of the sketchiest things I’ve ever seen.
The story is that the owner hit a curb hard and destroyed the front wheel and damaged the frame. Darn shame because it was a very nice frame. The owner “fixed” the frame and rode it for another 2 years.
I’m sure gugie and bulgie will have something to say about this.

Top tube cut out and aluminum sleeve inserted. Small screws on bottom of tube to hold sleeve in place. Aesthetics were lacking so it was wrapped in red duct tape
I haven’t taken this apart yet but looking at it, the bottom tube was cut and another sleeve inserted and various screws and outer sleeve attached.
Reynolds 753. Fancy!

Don't throw it away!
That frame can be repaired.
Normally the cost of a new HT/TT/DT and repaint is not worth it, but maybe for this frame?
Especially don't throw it away if it's old enough to be metric-sized tubes (28.0 DT, 26.0 TT). Those tubes are worth something as replacement spares for other 753 frames. Metric 753 raw tubes are practically rocking-horse droppings.

Fork is original AND not bent!
Amazing - another piece of this bike that can be saved!
I don't know, the frame straddles the edge of the "specialness" scale that would justify paying to have the DT and TT replaced, IMHO, without having a personal connection to it.
Love SBDU frames though - maybe someone else will feel otherwise?

Just need to do the same on the downtube, add a couple of mtb seat post quick releases, and you’d have a telescoping adjustable race bike.

**caveat to my statement about the fork. I only gauged it with my eyeball and the fact that the front wheel removed easily. Maybe it was damaged and straightened professionally and the bill caused the owner to fix the remainder at home. How hard could it be!!??
