i wear full finger gloves I get a big box stores. They keep my hands warm in even in warmer weather that still causes them to be cold. The real reason is I am a jazz guitarist and I want my hands protected. Now for the craziest thing I am a runner and I wear gloves year around when I run. Again hand protection I have fallen before and wipe the eyes of sweat. In the winter it is must have and I have Reynard's Syndrome so my hands can be cold when it is 70 degrees. Never do I wear cycling gloves the best source and cheapest are from Menards.

Comfort, grip, and protection against road rash in the event of a crash. I use leather bar tape and without gloves, they would get quite slick in the summer heat. In the cooler weather. long finger gloves to keep my hands warm, or at least not too cold.

Also, adding to @rubiksoval's point, there's bar tape that is much easier to grip when wet, but a lot of people don't like the tacky silicone texturized stuff.

They can do a lot of things but a big thing is hand protection in a crash and looking badass with half finger stuff

Never had gloves on bike, this discussion makes me think... also never wear protective glasses and never had a helmet on bike... at least when I get a chance to ride bike again, I will have cyclocomputer which will make me feel less behind times.

I always wear gloves. Have for years. Better post crash. Nice on the geared bikes - better grip on hot says, warmer when cold, lessens callus buildup on the base of my palms.
On the fix gear, I always wear long fingered MTB gloves if there are any hills. The long fingers protect the sides of my index and middle fingers from the undersides of the brake levers. I've rubbed those areas to bleeding with short fingered gloves on long climbs. Sucks when you are already there and there is still 2 miles to go.

My hands sweat, don't need to put further stress on the handlebar and bar tape.
If you do fall it prevents rash on the hands at least.

Got bit by a dog on the hand as I was dismounting. Two decent punctures on the outside of hand, top and bottom. Gloves would have helped, I make sure to wear them now.

Ride comfort is the main use I get out of mine. I got some non-padded gloves and my arms got more fatigued using them than with my old padded gloves - so that's all I use now. I have an old 1990s vintage Pearl Izumi and Specialized gel-type padded and they ensure more comfort for me ( n=1 ). My newer Shok-Tek padded gloves work well also.

A local hotshot tells me that my wearing gloves is “uncool”. I’m paraphrasing, but he sent me pics of the pros on workout rides without them.

I wear them when it's cold...when it's around 50 light gloves, heavier when it gets colder. For 10 or more years, throughout the rest of the year I wore fingerless cycling gloves, hoping that the padding would help my poor, arthritis damaged hands. 3 summers ago, one day when it was hot, in the 90s, and as always, they were drenched in sweat, I decided to take them off as it seemed ridiculous to wear them when it was that hot, though I had for years. Then I concluded they weren't helping my hands anyway, and quit...I still wear gloves when it gets cold, can't imagine doing without.
