Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Best All Around Alloy Wheel?

Just considering upgrading wheels on my Evo and I'm undecided on what wheelset to get. Ive had Boyd Cycling carbon 38s and I really like their hubs. So would their Alamont wheelset(alloy) be just as good or even better for an everyday hard ridden wheelset? My other considerations are the Zipp 101s and the Williams Cycling system 30s (24/28 spoke). Anybody with experience with any of these wheelsets can shine some light her and possibly give some personal experience with any of these wheelsets? My main goal is do get a fast rolling reliable wheelset that I can ride without any worries.

Altamont is a solid choice. If you want the best, you could have a similar rim (Belgium C2 or Pacenti) built around a higher-end hub (WI T11, CK r45, etc.)...but that gets spendy very quickly.

How about something from Psimet? I think he's from somewhere in Illinois fairly close to you.

Williams are really popular around here, as they are a NorCal local company. Really good reputation: light enough to race on; solid and reliable enough to train/commute on.

Which Evo and wheels? Mine came with RS81 wheels and I've been pretty happy with them. I think they are as good and maybe better than a couple custom sets I have including one using CK hubs and C2 rims. The DA C24 wheels would likely be just that little bit better.

I have a '14 Evo Ultegra Racing Edition

So the wheels are the FSA Energy.

Don't know anything about those wheels, but I'd put the DA C24 on your short list. If interested, there is also a tubeless version.

I love my Rolf Vigors. They have held up well, roll easily, look cool, wide rimmed. I feel good about recommending them.

So there you have it. The best alloy wheel is clearly:

Boyd, Psimet, Williams, Rolf, Rol, Fulcrum, Shimano, Soul, and some hand built HED's.

Seems like the choice is clear.

Yes, but what if you didn't have to have the "best" alloy wheel but only the one you liked the best. One might think that would be an easier choice, no? Apparently not for most people. Carry on.

Extremely pleased with mine as well. Didn't spend a fortune either. Built them myself.

Personally, I'd start by checking out my LBS to see what they can do. I went this route with my first set of non-stock wheels and they've been great.

I've got the DA C24's. Great wheels. Super light, roll well. I was very very seriously considering the Altamounts, until I saw a NIB set of C24's on craigslist for too good a price. The main downside to the C24 is that its about $200 more than the Altamonts, which is kind of a different price category.

How about Rol brand wheels? The Race SL looks like a great all around wheelset and gets great reviews. Looking at them as a replacement for my stock shimano r500s.
