Home made tandem Schwinn?
Is this beast homemade or does the "0" showing on the head tube mean it's an experimental one off by Schwinn? 
We're guessing home made. It weighs a ton as you might imagine. Your thoughts?

I was initially going to say homemade from the first pic, but those welds look too consistent with Schwinn's, making me lean toward one of theirs! My old Schwinn Varsity came in at 38 lbs which is what my Cannondale RT1000 is at. I can't imagine what that bike weighs. Maybe an employee lunch time project?

It looks to be made up from different frames. The head tube and seat tube angles are different, and spacing between the top tube and down tube at the head tube is different. I would tend to mark it as a home made job.

It really looks like 2+ frames cobbled together. the really long stoker top tube is very unusual for the era. I'm also ussing that the realive lack of bracing makes for a fairly flexible ride. I vote for homemade by a skilled brazer/welder -- get some air in those tires, take it for a spin, and let us know how it rides!

they made a Schwann twin and it looks nothing like this.
no reason you’d design a bike with the orphan head tube in the back.

so some well done welds just make it a well welded Frankenbike. No one designs that from the ground up on a clean sheet of paper.

Given how long the wheelbase on that home-made tandem is, I would have completed a "triangle" from the bottom bracket of the "front donor bike" to what was the former steerer headtube on the "rear donor bike". Yeah, it would add even more weight but given the overall length of it, I wouldn't be too comfortable riding that down even small hills without an added bar there to complete the "triangle". I do like it. Grade A+ for creativity !!! Perhaps a B+ for execution!!
