I still endorse the above statement, but when I made it I had temporarily forgotten that I am also old school.

Dear Bike Forums diary,

I quit/got fired from the job that was 12 miles away and got a job 3 miles away that pays half as much. At first I was getting twice the hours as the previous job (at twice the rate, just so weíre keeping up) but now am getting the same hours as the previous job so effectively am earning at 25% the previous rate, or 12.5% the previous previous rate, before the hours were halved.

I have an opportunity to work at a similar job also 3 miles away but on a rather treacherous stretch of road that Iíd rather avoid on my bike. I havenít calculated it yet but if I avoid that stretch of road and opt instead for the trails I think it will be closer to a 10 mile trip each way. But I should be getting twice the hours, and maybe even a higher pay rate.

Iím not tired of bike commuting yet.

Dear Bike Forums Diary,

I will be getting a car soon. Itís been almost 3 years. I donít want to live car free in Indiana. It sucks.

I think a station wagon would be nice. Or maybe a Honda Civic.

It looks like Indiana has passed or will be passing a handsfree device law with a $500 fine for violation.

If Iím not living car free or bike commuting,
I might take the fenders off of my bike and just ride when the weather is nice. 🤷‍♂️

Dear bike forums diary,

I quit riding my bike to work. Iíve been through 2 more bikes since my last post here. I donít want to ride skinny tire bikes anymore. I have a big old mountain bike now.

Iím not at all that into bike commuting anymore. Getting hit by that car a couple years ago really took the wind out of my sails. I still like to ride for running errands and light shopping when the weather is nice. I pretty much will only ride my bike when itís nice outside now.

Dear Bike Forums diary,

2021 was a joke.

I have been diagnosed rather late in life (right before my 40th birthday) with Aspergerís syndrome. Explains a bunch.

Bunch of childhood and other traumas started unpacking themselves over the last couple years, and 2021 was probably (hopefully) the hardest.

I maybe rode 50 miles on my bikes all year.

Deleted all my social media and fell out of touch with everybody, for the 4th time in like 6 years. Went into a deep isolation (ďshutdownĒ) for about 6 months.

Realized that my ďshutdownsĒ are related to my Aspergerís, and that the times Iíve been suicidal have all correlated with my taking antidepressants (Wellbutrin) and once trying Aderall, and evidently my chemistry doesnít get along with Ibuprofen either. I wasnít taking antidepressants in response to feeling suicidal, I became that way as the medication started ďworkingĒ, usually about 3 weeks in.

Iím real hung up on this Aspergerís thing. Thatís what we do, we get hung up on stuff. Obsessions. Collections. Ideas.

I started making music again in 2021, so that was kind of cool. I didnít really play much for about 10 years there and didnít write or record any music for about 15. I bought a bass and a bass amp and an electric piano and started recording my ideas on my phone using GarageBand and a little audio interface.

My resolutions for 2021 were something like

-live gracefully
-play bass
-listen to my body

I dunno whether Iíll ride my bike much or not. We moved out to the country last fall. We had been living in the suburbs for about 10 years and prior to that lived closer to downtown, so itís been like a gradual migration. Itís real nice to ride out here. I mean really nice. I just donít have any remaining desire to spend more than about an hour at a time on a bike. 🤷‍♂️

Guess thatís all for now.
