2012 Felt Brougham 3spd fixie
Has anyone here owned or own, a Felt Brougham 3 spd fixie? I'm going to look at one today. Just not sure if I want a multi gear fixed gear.......?

I've read that there were a lot of problems with those Sturmey-Archer 3-speed fixed hubs. Supposedly there was a lot of play, which made them feel like there was a super loose chain. Make sure you take a test ride before buying it.

I did and didn't not care for it. He had a nice SE Lager I bought instead.

I've had one for over ten years now and haven't had any problems. IIRC, there were issues with the first production run, but they got sorted in later production. The "loose chain" feel is because a certain amount of "lash" is needed in order to allow the gears to change smoothly. You get accustomed to it pretty quickly. My only real complaint is the goofy gear ratios: 0.625/0.75/1.0; I would have preferred two closely spaces gears at the high end, with a low "bail out" gear for headwinds and uphills. The old Sturmey-Archer ACS 3-speed fixed-gear hub that went out of production around 1960 had that gearing: 0.75/0.90/1.0, but they're hard to find and god-awful expensive when you do find one.

I want a hub like that to work, that would be awesome. A geared fixed gear would be so awesome. Being able to shift but not having to coast would be cool.

Ahh well thank you, that's good to know. I passed on one yesterday for $125. It's still available. Wonder if I should pick it up?
