in priceless, she's dressed to kill throughout the whole movie
wearing designer dress after designer dress.
in amelie, she's kinda frumpy but in a cute way.
in dirty pretty things, she's down to earth-very gritty-
but it's the best movie (a 8.5-9) i've seen her in.
let's not discuss the da vinci code.

Bike ≠ Car ≠ Ped.
Ponyo - 10
I'd give it more, but Spirited Away was even better.
Who would've thought that I could still sit there, watch some hand-drawn animation, and keep saying, "Wow..."

it might get loud-a rockumentary with guitar gods jimmy page, edge from u2 and jack white
from the white stripes/raconteurs. i give it a solid 9. anyone with at least a passing interest in the
history and future of rock n' roll should see it at their local indie moviehouse or rent it when it comes
out. in this group, page ends up looking like the straight-up player (regardless of the sonic vocabulary
he added/modified/enhanced over the years), edge comes out as the tech geek and jack white plays
as the deconstructionist, going back to the bluesy roots of rock n' roll (even more than page's early
years w/ yardbirds & zep). those that actually play guitar may score it higher and i wouldn't argue
with them. goosebump-inducing footage, especially with page.

in the loop-a foreign affairs/political/current events satire not so loosely
based on the us/british-led united nations resolution to invade iraq (colin powell
anyone?). deals mainly with the networking/politicking/backstabbing/backscratching
aspects that unfold before tv cameras start rolling. obscenity-laden and unfolds
at a frantic pace but that just adds to the "ambiance." some good performances
and one great performance by the scottish alpha-male. i give it a 7.5.

a busy weekend supporting the local indie theater.
also a midnight showing of a clockwork orange: 9.5-10.
i hadn't seen it it about 15 years and had "misremembered"
just how intense & disturbing it was.
no wonder it generated so much controversy in 1971!
lots of twenty-something's and barely street-legal kids in
attendance. judging from the overheard post-viewing
comments and looking at their post-viewing faces
, i don't think
many in attendance had seen the flick before. even though
it's been nearly forty years since the film's release, it still
retains enormous visual impact and societal commentary.
the passage of time has not lessened its' power.
kubrick...what a genius.

4 stars out of 5. I really charming little film. Albert Brooks and Meryl Streep who's about as good in this as she has been in anything.

District 9. Best Sci-fi I have seen. The 10mins the male lead spends in the Robosuit is worth 4 hours of The Transformers.

movies but it is the slowest/arguably most developed of his efforts (in a single movie
release format) and lacks the explosiveness of the kill bills, pulp fiction, inglourious
basterds, et al. least favorite is reservoir dogs but i know that is some people's fave.
regardless, has any director ever made the inane & trivial so essential & central to their
movies in a good way? with tarantino, it is indeed about the journey just as much as (and
perhaps even more so than) the destination.

Anal Lesbians - 1 out of 10.
A huge disappointment. It was about two fat ugly women dressed in overalls who were labelling all the containers in their fridge.

sticking with the dirty/nasty theme, watched the political history film
frost/nixon. highly recommended for those interested in
history, poli sci or pop culture.
i give it a 8.5-9. frank langella is fantastic as richard m. nixon. what a
complex and twisted character-fascinating case study.

Bike ≠ Car ≠ Ped.
I feel like I should go see it again before it leaves, for no other reason than to contribute another few bucks to good cinema.

Oh, yeah --
It Might Get Loud - maybe a 7, I guess. I'm not a guitar player, so maybe some of the actual technique went over my head. Putting Jack, Jimmy, and The Edge together on a stage to chat seemed contrived, unfortunately, but it was interesting to see three radically different approaches to the instrument.
I guess I wanted to see more depth, more of the weird **** that only fellow performers seem to understand, and maybe some revelations. Most of the time I was going, "Yeah, I know... I get that... played weirder stuff than that myself..."
Don't get me wrong -- the musicianship was outstanding, and the stories they told were interesting. I just wanted to see more, I guess.

"Observe and Report"
"Observe and Report"
New on DVD. Checked it out last night and would give it a "7" for an interesting performance by Seth Rogen. Dark comedy feels long despite a running time under 90 minutes. Satisfying conclusion.
