Twilight. 3/10 and only that high because I like the art direction. It's one of those movies I love to hate. I've seen it three times!

Bike ≠ Car ≠ Ped.
By watching him move, you wouldn't know he was fifty years old. He looked like he did when he performed Billie Jean at the Grammys in '84.

the limey with terence stamp & peter fonda (& luis guzman).
always loved terence but his career has been a little "uneven."
i give it a 9. it's a "short, sharp, shock." good steven soderbergh vehicle.
no loose ends...

Rambling, state of the art disaster film about Mayan prediction of end of days. John Cusack stars as novel writer caught up in the mayhem. First look at falling bridges, buildings and buckling earth is breathtaking but gets repetitious over the two hour, 38 minute running time. Some interesting supporting characters including Woody Harrelson as a doomsday prophet. Government conspiracy overtones and lessons about broken families.
7-out-of-10.

Just saw Pirate Radio.. It was a c+. Music was great. Plot sort of dolty. / What I am looking forward to is "A Serious Man." Coen Brothers film. See it tomorrow night. Let you know what I think. I have high expectations.

the hit-(1984, i think) with terence stamp, john hurt & a very young tim roth.
beautiful scenery. stamp is great as always. hurt seems a bit miscast. feel it
could have been better given the basic storyline and the players. gets a 6.

the boondock saints (ii)-all saints day-plenty of gratuitous violence.
lacks the charm of the original which was to be expected. if you liked the
first one, you'll like this one. 7.5.

don't make waves (1967) with tony curtis, claudia cardinale & sharon tate.
always thought that curtis was an underrated comedic actor with his quirky delivery.
set in southern california-mostly on the beach in malibu. sharon tate doesn't say
much but doesn't have to-she's got ...presents...er...presence. claudia cardinale
plays the carefree italian artist perfectly. i give it an 8 (extra half point for
including both claudia & sharon in the same movie).

Monsters vs. Aliens. 7/10. Nice effort from DreamWorks but still not in the same league as Pixar.

A Serious Man (Coen Brothers). 8.5/10. Different, and worth the admission price.

Rashomon - 9/10, probably. This 1950 film brought soon-to-be-legendary Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa to the West. Very cool -- certainly a welcome change from the usual Hollywood crap.

Pretty amazing for a first time director and a tiny budget.
Looking forward to Bowie Junior's next effort.

lawrence of arabia. long but well worth it. great soundtrack by maurice jarre.
the scene where omar sharif first makes his introduction is among the greatest scenes
in celluloid history. visually stunning & no one does train wrecks like david lean 9.5-10.

I'd give "Star Trek" about 4 out of 10.
I didn't find the actors to be very convincing as younger versions of the vintage characters. Though maybe that's not an easy thing to do and I shouldn't be too critical.
The writing seemed to be a bit slip-shod. Consider how Kirk was onboard the Enterprise as little more than a stowaway yet was promoted to second in command by Captain Pike as he was leaving to be a hostage aboard the Romulan ship. He was then able to more or less hoodwink Spock into resigning command and became captain in a flash. I know it's an adventure and need not have a lot of resemblance to reality, but it would seem like they could come up with something that makes better sense than that.
The original series had relatively few really good stories. Many were poor and others were mediocre. But there was something compelling and likable about the people. If the folks who made this movie couldn't have re-created that, then they should have given a better story.
