hoods for plastic mafac levers?
have any of you placed new hoods on plastic mafac levers?
i'm only familiar with the ubiquitous cane creek hoods and the dia-compes velo orange offers.
the plastic bodies are no longer pretty enough to go bare, and new hoods would feel much better to the hands.

cane creek hoods sort of fit. had i a dremel tool, i could have taken some material off the levers for a better fit. they work, although one tore a bit in the fitting process.

Those are neat. But, you know, that is, what?…thirty five year old plastic. Are they safe to use? I don't really know but I think I would hesitate, if it were me.

I think they'd give at least a warning before failing completely, and there isn't as much weight on them as on a stem, and the steering control doesn't rely on their survival. Therefore, I'd say the risk is extremely low.

I was thinking of the plastic snapping right where that pivot pin is. While using the lever. But maybe there isn't a lot of stress at that point. But hey, live dangerously, Eschlwc!

You could try and find something that fits them but they never came with anything, just the plastic body, and there is not much information on that particular model ( Promotional/ Course 130 ) other than a possible introduction around the early '70's I have been trying to find out myself - as well as dating my Lejeune they came on, which I am quite sure is no newer than 1970, most likely 1968/69 but I am still looking for clarification on that. I would not worry too much - as long as there is no obvious cracking they should be fine. I will be using mine. The last two images are of a Follis on ebay, no mention of the year of the bike though.

^ yeah, i would have just left them sans hoods if i were going to keep the bike for myself. i still may for a year or more. i just thought new hoods would help sell the bike.
well, we ride bikes on roads shared by cars and giant trucks. if forty year old levers kill me instead of an unattentive driver texting gibberish, i'll embrace it head-on.
