Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

11,000 miles on the cervelo and never had to service my brakes.

Just don’t leave your bike upside down for extended periods of time.

With the amount of wet pavement rides you do, you're probably going to love discs.

Learning to pull the lever takes some time but you get used to it. Saves the wear on your shoes from dragging your feet.

Hey! The Fred Flintstone braking method works well enough for the Saturn.

When I was in high school, I built myself a bike without brakes. I occasionally used it to pull a wagon with my friend and his girlfriend in it. It was not a fixie.

I used to work in a lab where we were doing <stuff that involved radio signals> for the Navy. One guy was a big "Madonna" fan. No one else could stand the noise. So someone wired up a signal generator to a very directional antenna. Told him that if he wanted to listen to that he would have to wear headphones. Problem solved. If you do that at home I think it is a serious criminal offense, but in that lab, well, we had some special permission.

In the mid 90s I worked at a dealer which was spread out on a large lot. They used the P.A. system for everything, every page of a salesperson for every phone call, etc. They also used it to page the lot porters to bring up service cars, etc. The porters would hide and pretend they didn't hear it so management turned the volume way up.

It was so loud people in an apartment complex blocks away were complaining. Ridiculous. The operator who did most of the broadcasting had a piercing, nasally voice and she would repeat her pages within 15 seconds if the person she paged didn't respond. One of the huge outdoor speakers was aimed right at my work area. I used to hear that thing in my sleep, like in "Office Space".

One day I cut the wires going to the speaker in my area. Relief! Some of the other mechanics thanked me and I would hook it back up when I went home. Of course the stupid porters used the speaker being down as an excuse to avoid doing their work so eventually management found the severed wire. Bummer.

No, you don't drag your feet. That's Flintstone brakes, not discs.

EDIT: Should probably have read further before trying to post a witty rejoinder.

I've been to Kingston, NY in the Hudson Valley dozens of times. Was the original capital of NY State BITD. Canada prolly just copied the name hoping the prestige would come with it. Same thing happened over on the other end of the country, in Vancouver.

Word is, just make sure they're Shimano if you want to self-service them.

Gardex is a Canadian company, so they might try calling them to see what can be done. Without the combination or a safe cracker, they will likely have to resort to cutting it open.

If it looks like this, you can cut off the hinges -

But, if the bolts are on two or more sides, you are still left to contend with that. If it is a fire safe, the bolts may only be on one side since their purpose is more to prevent burning up than protecting against theft.

Or, you can learn to crack a safe - How to Crack a Safe (with Pictures) - wikiHow

There is likely little of any value in it. Most people have then just to store things such as passports, birth certificates, insurance papers, etc. Might have his will though, if he has one.
