I once was doing an out-and-back that included PCH between Seal Beach and Newport Beach.
Flew down to Newport and dreaded the return to Seal along PCH while being sprayed by sand.
Those onflow coastals are whip like at times.
Feared my carbon frame would be pitted by the gusts. Very demoralizing. I would rather stay in the hills where I know what I am facing.

You probably had it worse in terms of headwind duration, whereas mine was just worse timing with headwind coinciding with the biggest climb on my comeback route. I used to be able to grind up that hill on a 34:25 ratio, but yesterday, first time back, even a 34:28 ratio was barely enough.

Anyone else in the LA area less motivated to ride because of the June Gloom? I'm still riding every week, but I prefer to see the sun and blue skies!

I like seeing blue skies too but I figure I better build my climbing fitness while the weather is in the high 60s and low 70s, else I will be dead meat once it is in the mid 80s.

Well, got out in the June Gloom in the Whittier Hills but I wore my yellow tinted bifocals so that helps.
No drizzle but that is coming tomorrow morning. Encountered one club ride making the turn onto East Rd from Fullerton Rd in La Habra Hgts.
Otherwise, riders were scant today.

40 miles and 4.7K of climb.

I've been riding every other day, but I only ride about 20-25 miles per ride. Thursday I did my usual Griffith Observatory climb and today I did a quick 20 miles on the 1x road bike in and around the Rose Bowl. I just don't have time for major group rides or anything scenic with work and family life. I would ride more, but I also strength train on odd days, putting a total of 6 days of cycling/weights. Sunday I rest!

My perfect weather is 65-75 and sunshine, but I’ll ride in anything above 45 as long as it’s not raining. I have Zwift as an option for those days.

Giro San Diego does Palomar Mt and Mesa Grande. Few of us added extra credit to Observatory to lock in those hundo and almost 11k ft climbing stats. The other half of my group gave me the bird Great weather overall, they said about 700 riders today. First climb was bottle necked but spread out pretty quick at the top.

...

How does all that (7 hours in the saddle, > 100 miles, almost 11k ft. climbing) burn only 5000 calories!? Does Strava automatically subtract all the beers consumed?

haa does seem a lil low for the sustained efforts. I think it pulled the numbers from the Wahoo data, I have Stages left arm PM on this bike.

Sunday...23mi/3400' gravel ride. Cool and damp conditions, but not sloppy. My climbing power continues to inch upward, and I'm starting to feel a strength on the bike that I have not felt in a long time. I snapped my chain in a high-torque mid-shift situation, but I was able to repair it pretty quickly on the trail. A short time later, while passing a guy and his dog on a singletrack, the dog decided to chase me for a while. Thankfully, his endurance was pretty low. Other than that, it was pretty nice ride, and my legs were pretty smoked at the end (intentionally).

Ah, so "hero" dirt means not a pebble in sight?

"Hero dirt" is when there's just enough moisture to make it firm for fast rolling and super-grippy for excellent cornering traction. Drier gets loose and sandy (in other words, normal So Cal conditions). Wetter gets sloppy and slippery.

I was at Cherry Canyon awhile back and another cyclist was commenting on how nice the dirt was. Honestly I tend to prefer the dry-n-loose dirt. Traction isn't great, but it doesn't stick to my drivetrain causing that gritty/grinding noise. Another issue I have is when that grit gets on my water bottles, it tends to scratch them up from usage. I just received a pair of magnetic water bottles just to avoid that issue.

Somewhat less motivated but more of trying to find the time to actually ride. I'm ok with the June gloom as long as it's not raining and humid like it did last year.

Same here. I rode the gravel main path in Peters Canyon two days after it rained, and it took forever to clean my bike.

31-miler east of the home base, tapping into the el cajon valley. biggest effort was the 3 mile climb up to the hamlet of crest.
scored an entire 4 mins of sunshine enroute. a little muggy in the valley with temps in the high 60's and not that much breeze.
stopped for a quick two ipa's at bns brewing along ca hwy 67 next-door to the santee drive-in. didn't see any other cycling crazies
out but got a late, 2pm start. could have something to do with it...

I knocked out a quick 20 miles this late afternoon around the Rose Bowl. While doing my route, the Tuesday night Rose Bowl group ride passed me. I decided to hop the draft on the tail end to see what the pace was like and we were hitting like 30mph plus on the flats. I pulled off partway because I did a lot of work to catch the group and I wasn't planning on such a fast pace ride! I'm now somewhat tempted to give them a serious try, but I'm wondering if I can hold out for an entire 8-10 laps!

The meteorologist is wrong again! Promised early afternoon sunshine but more of the SOS.
Oh well. Toured the Whittier Hills in a loop and sometimes it is what it is.
