Wrapping your frame versus paint

So while I have looked at having a frame painted in the past, something I never thought about ever, was using a wrap, like people do with their cars and trucks. I was watching a Chris Miller blog and they were discussing this and I thought, that is an awesome idea and something I would consider. Much cheaper and you could change it down the road if it get damaged or you grew tired of it.

Well go to 9:03 time stamp

it's a good idea as it'll likely protect better against road kick-up, but I would think the constant roundness of the frame to be a pita to get right. i hated doing bumpers & hoods with scoops. I also hated doing window tint, but tint material was cheaper, so it was less of a hit in the pocketbook.

I've often thought about it as Bunnyhop are fairly local, but I could never choose a design! I was surprised just how light weight the full wrap was.

Yea, I agree, I hated doing my own tint, but now, the shops have that stuff in a computer and a plotter printer, cuts out perfect and makes installation so much easier, that it is worth paying someone to do it.

There is a neighbor of mine and his son wrapped his giant truck some metallic neon green, he owns a land scape company, so I get it. It is not my style, but he told me it was really light weight and said the amount of options you can do with this stuff is amazing. Told me they are some companies with a spray type wrap that is stupid expensive that you would never know was a wrap. Said it looks like a ultra expensive paint that you can just peel off.

I often had to hand cut it since most plotters jammed with the thicker dark tint rolls, but yes, pretty much all the shops input the vehicle info & the cutter goes to work. That process reduced the costs, by a lot.

I dig the look of that ride. It would see little action as I would want to keep it looking good.

Recently saw a Vintage Motobecane like Fixy that had a Chrome Wrap on it. Wish I had taken a picture. It was a professional job. I could not see a seam anywhere. He had not removed the Bosses (THANK YOU VERY MUCH), The wrap was tight at the base of the bosses, and above had been painted black. Same with the Drop Outs. I really don't know if the wrap was durable enough to last but that frame could well have been a Wall Hanger in a shop for sure.

My newest bike has large expanses of uninspired silver. I've been thinking of having a wrap for the downtube above the bottle cage. Maybe in a mid-century/ atomic theme, in homage to my age and the aluminum of the frame. I think it will be less than $100.

If it was a Fabulous Thunderbird, I'd say wrap it up, I'll take it. Otherwise, I'd have to think about it first.

Had a friend clear wrap his new bike to protect the paint. He said with all the curves and angles it was a real PITA and took several hours and still was not perfect. He said it was extremely exasperating. You may need infinite patience to do it right.

My dad was one of the engineers that took up that challenge. My mom and my siblings were basically Fatherless for 5 years during the 60's while all that was going on. Many of the people involved in that program lost families for one or more reason, all because they had a vision and a desire to make something happen that some people said was pointless and a waste of time. Yea it was tough, it was hard, and god did it suck not having my dad around, but it sucked for many families as well, but it is the people that think out of the box and come up with different way of doing things that help improve life. So many things from the space program are now part of everyday life that many people have no clue were part of the space program, it has just sort of been there for many years.

So if wrapping a bike frame is not your bag, good deal, enjoy your bike like you want. Some people might look at wrapping a bike frame as a cool little way to express themselves and make their bike a masterpiece and that might be that one little thing that gives them a spark toward greatness in whatever path they take in life. You just never know what that spark is until it flashes in your eyes.

If it's not for you, cool beans, enjoy your bike just like it is and stay safe while you ride your masterpiece.

I infer the presence of "/s".
To be fair, there are many Spin-Offs of the Space Program, likely including the computer this is viewed on.
Spoiler: "Tang" preceded Project Mercury by several years.

Tang was here before th space missions.

But, how about thermal blankets, fireproof firefighter suits, shock absorbing shoe soles, the insulin pump, scratch resistant lenses, advanced cameras, dust busters, shock absorbers for building and bridges,
LASIK which was used to track astronauts eyes while in space, solar cells, water filtration, wireless headsets, adjustable smoke sensors, grooved pavement, baby formula, memory foam, air purifier, LEDs, home insulation, ice-resistance airplanes, computer mouse, fly-by wire...

Duct tape was invented in the 40's by a woman in the munitions industry worried about water getting into the boxes.

Jax,

I would have liked your post twice if that were possible. Replies like this are inexplicable to me; if you don't want to contribute something useful, or at least interesting, why not STFU? I read your initial post because it's an intriguing idea. Keep on.

BC
