Two decades ago I used to ride with a local club. There's nothing quite like being part of a large, fast moving peloton! It was a very well-behaved club, lots of experienced riders. But one day, someone who wasn't part of the ride decided to cut into the line and took down one of our riders, and the rest of us barely managed not to end up in a pile. You can trust your skills, you can trust your group, but you can't stop some clown from screwing it up.

Yes, but what if Tusveld had crashed through a carbon fiber barrier while riding a metal frame? In that scenario, he clearly would have jumped back on his unblemished bike and won the stage. Yep, for sure.

My list of worries when road riding:-
1. Being hit from behind by a truck/car
2. Being taken out when riding in a bunch
3. Crashing after hitting unseen debris or major pothole
4. Crashing after a slide in the wet or diesel on the road
5. Crashing after a sudden high-speed tyre blowout
.

.
.
1000+. My CF frame spontaneously assploding.

I am more impressed by how many of those riders get up and jump on a spare and keep going
if you look at old crashes it seems that steel bikes did not break into pieces as much, not sure if the makes much difference other than the potential for sharp edges
but as many have noted this is racing on the edge..... I would be more concerned in real life with carbon rims and blown a tubeless tire, of course this is paris roubaix

I have no worries about quality carbon rims either. They are super tough IME.

Same, I broke a steel BMX frame at the seat collar when I was 12. My buddies dad welded it back together in his garage, but the bike was never quite the same after that.
Also that same summer my next door neighbor snapped his BMX bike in half landing off a huge dirt jump that we had made in a construction site. The head tube (including front fork, steerer tube handlebars and stem) broke off from the top/down tube. It still remains the most epic crash that I've ever witnessed and I'll never forget seeing my friend laying face down on the ground, still holding onto the handlebars while the rest of his bike was several feet behind him.

to note tubeless on cobbles has just become common in the last 2 years, before that it was tubular tires which do not have the same issue when flatted

not hating on carbon. more reflecting on the fact that carbon has a different failure mode than aluminum or steel.

Top 10. I got hit twice in the last few years. One straight into my lips and I looked like Mick Jagger by the end of the ride. Had another hit me in the thigh, which was pretty sore too. I think they get attracted by CF frames.
