I'm not far off doing a full resto job on the first bike I ever bought with my own money. It's around 1985 model MTB and dont even know what it is because I stupidly took all the decals off when I bought it.
But somehow Raleigh is stuck in my mind. Its also got one of those chinese two stroke motors fitted that I bought when they first came out on the market. That was when they were a novelty now I see them everywhere so I'll chuck that away.
I'm really getting into this vintage thing it adds a extra element to cycling and great fun to tinker with them and I'll put a pic on here when its done.

Here's mine, I believe it is a 96 Specialized Rockhopper. Just got it on the road today as a matter of fact. Was going to buy new but thought what the hey this is cheaper, at least so far. After riding it for a 10 mile loop today I realize the saddle has to go.

1997 Rockhopper w/ XT derailleur, Gila Shocks, Hyperglide cassette and new chain last year--unfortunately when I bought her I didn't realize she has a small crack on the head tube--this one can only do pavement traveling; 2nd bike is a 1994 Hard Rock Specialized(bought brand new back when steel was more common) w/ newer Kenda Kross tires, new rear rim, fork Rock shock taken from Rockhopper, seat and grip shifters taken from rockhopper, new pedals, derailleur slx and chain from Rockhopper--this Hard Rock is perfect for hauling my daughter on a trail a bike.

You shouldn't ride the cracked frame, it's risky. Put your best parts on the Hard Rock and ride that one. The frame might be a little heavier, but probably not much, and the geometry is probably pretty similar.

I agree, I shouldn't ride with the cracked frame. I wanted to get my moneys worth and road probably over 300 miles on it. I'll be sure to look at a frame more if I ever get a used bike again. It made me buy a new Hard Rock for rugged terrain. It also makes sense to buy new since this would be covered by a warranty.

I really like the colors, frame, rack, bottle cage. They might work better if you put the cage (red Blackburn MTB cage ) on the down tube. Also you can carry Starbucks cup if the cage is vertical. More of the SS/FG influence. Just an idea.

My first MTB was a Ross Mt. Hood of the same vintage, though not quite as nice as your Diamondback which I believe was second from top of their line. I coveted the Tomac signature model just above the Apex. My Ross had the under chain stays brake placement but came with the Suntour Rollercam brakes based o a design by WTB. I had Rollercams on my fork too. The Shimano U-brake was too ugly to be on a fork. The Rollercams were sort of cool looking, but cantis really made better sense and the U-Brake/Rollercam brakes went the way of the dinosaurs...

I dig the spare spoke holder! You need to put a couple more spokes there!

yeah i need one more spoke :-p i think originally the bike came with a roller cam brake but i didn't feel like looking for one, and i got the ubrake for free from the LBS.. just had to buy brake pads

the bike has two sets of bottle holder brazons on the downtube but none on the seat tube

My 1988 Mongoose Alta came with that configuration. My 1996 Mongoose has none on the seattube either - one on top of the downtube and one on its underside.

1995 Giant ATX Not to Hybrid-ized, just added lights and water bottles, changed tires. But the bike is all Alivio,
wheel hubs, crank, shifters, both DR's, brakes, etc...and only 27 pounds. Rides good and shifts very smooth, not
bad for 80.00 dollars on CL, plus a half day of labor on tune up.

This one was not really a mountain bike, more like a mountain-bike-shaped-object but I'm hybridizing it anyways. It's single speed at the moment. Thinking of going fixed if I can find a good deal on a wheel or hub. Big wire basket on front will be required I think.

mid 80's univega alpina uno. i had a problem finding either canti or v brakes that would work. the pin hole for the brake return spring was opposite of normal, resulting in a brake arm that moved into the rim instead of away when released. i had a set that i was able to drill a 2nd hole in that worked.

1989 Sakae Litage bonded aluminium. Has mtb tyres but I've only ridden it like a hybrid.

I've really been enjoying this 1992 Trek 950 I picked up recently. The bike rides great with reasonably lightweight 26 x 2.0 tires (no that's not a contradiction in terms):

This thread makes me wish I'd kept my old 1993 GT Corrado. It was a True Temper frame with Deore LX components throughout. The derailleurs were XT though. It was my first "real" bike since a Schwinn Le Tour from the '70s.

This isn't mine, but it looked just like this except for the handlebars and stem.
