Update to this project. The tailbox was moved to a more rugged mountain bike frame and LED lights were installed.

If the photo will load, a bigger set of rear panniers was / were tried on the Model 319 :

The Big Panniers temporarily mounted on the M319 for a fit test. These Panniers immediately went to my Type Eleven (11th Prototype).

BITD, bars set up that way were called “DUI bars”. Some guy, usually with an Army Surplus coat (sometimes in Camo) who still needed to get to work after his license was revoked, would get some entry level bike boom ten speed at a yard sale, would find these appealing.....

Hi.

319 B with Frame Box
Note: the 319 B “flip bars” were removed from the stem and reversed , so they are backwards compared to “DUI” bars.

Its time I posted a picture of the original Type 3 that I built hack in 1987.

Type 3 Models 317, 318, & 319 are based on the Type 3. Type 3 Fairing had No cargo capacity, it was strictly for aerodynamic advantage.

Photo montage showing the structural supports under the Model 318 fairing ( which the 319 lacks, BTW):

The Model 318 is heavier than the Model 319.

For me the carrier boxes and wind shield looked hideous at first - but it's actually a great idea. More aethetically pleasing, less boxy fairings would be a real winner. This is great fun. Well done! It's like a half faired motorcycle. The aluminium rack font fork looks great as well. Keep inventing and posting the pics!

Model 319 Fairing and Tailbox on a very cheap yard sale bike. No lights, white polypropylene.
The aerodynamic tailbox got moved to the other bike because it worked so good ( from the 319 to the 318). Now I’m starting to get cheap LED’s from online Chinese retailers. I might wrap the 319 in some kind of vinyl before putting the lights on it.

More LED lights have arrived. A new Tailbox was built hurriedly.

First test ride, to pick up some groceries in the big Tailbox

Plan of the new Model 791R Tailbox

The Fairing and the Tailbox wrapped in fancy gift wrap

The LED lights can be seen in these photos

hotbike 's designs are always evolving. A big part of the reason is that he rides often. I see his postings for Long Island rides. I'm hoping I will run into him one of these days. For sure I will know it is him.

He has all of us thinking that for a practical bike, a fairing makes sense. And his use of corrugated plastic to keep the shape strong and the weight down is innovative and good.

Keep us posted as the designs evolve.
