Personal Best today 👍

I’m 53 yrs old and started riding a few months ago. Began with 3 mile rides at average of 16mph. Bumped it up to 10 mile rides that took me around 35 mins.

Been riding about 340 miles a month for the last few months. Finally broke the 30 min mark today(which was a big goal of mine). On a side note: I’m now down to 201lbs (a loss of 38lbs). Pretty happy with my progress so far.

Good deal. I'm also 53 and been riding since I was 19 and I'm actually the strongest I've ever been. Never been overweight in my life and I rarely get sick. Most guys our age have a cabinet filled with prescription drugs haha

Much better than me, I ride 10 miles every morning but average about 41 minutes. Of course I'm also lugging around 50 more pounds than you are.

Not sure how hilly Syracuse is, but you're a speed demon in the making unless you're riding on mostly flat ground. Sounds like you're doing yourself some good with weight loss and improving stamina. All good!

My route is somewhat undulating…but a good amount of flat. Left side of my route(see pic) between the 7mile symbol and intersection is a long incline. What slows me down is all the turns….and the fact that my route is 5 miles long so I have to do a U-turn to start my second lap.

Funny to think, that only a few months ago….I didn’t even know how to shift gears on a road bike. Now I’m up and down the gears like it’s nothing.
Finally started get out of the saddle more. I was mistakenly trying to ride out of the saddle in too easy of a gear. 🤦‍♂️. Now I’m powering up the incline on my route without a problem.

Making more progress.

Maintained 30mph for 20 secs on a short seated sprint on a flat section of my route. Until today…..I hadn’t ridden faster than 25mph, and that was on a slight decline.

More progress:
Took my daily 10 mile ride today…and decided to stretch it out a bit. Would’ve done another 10miles had my phone not started dying. Wasn’t even tired when I stopped. Was a bit worried about bonking since I hadn’t eaten in a few hours, but luckily no issues. Today was the first time I’ve ridden over 10 miles in one ride.
(Sorry about the super large pic…no idea how to make it smaller)

GREAT!!!

If you wish to get just a bit more competitive, you should consider entering as a three person RELAY team in the upcoming Cazenovia SPRINT Triathlon on Aug 28th.

https://www.trisignup.com/Race/NY/Ca...a/CazenoviaTri

You would really enjoy doing the BIKE portion and racing against the clock and comparing your time to times clocked by others. YOU DON'T NEED ANY SPECIAL BIKE OR ANYTHING, as your current and most recent general ride times do indicate that you will be better than the average RELAY team's bicycle rider. YOU CAN EASILY DO THIS sprint Tri AS THE BICYCLE COURSE IS SHORT AND ALTHOUGH SLIGHTLY CHALLENGING, WOULD BE NOTHING FOR YOU, AS IT WOULD BE A BREEZE AND A LOT OF FUN, UNLESS THE WEATHER IS TERRIBLE. Just find a pal or relative that can do the SWIM portion and another who can do the RUN portion. Hey, if yall have never done a Tri before, the transitions are where you want to be as speedy as possible........so the Swimmer needs to move fast after getting out of the water and ramble fast to relay the "CHIP" to you on the bike so you can begin the bike portion....obviously you'll have to do the same at the end of the bike portion....relaying the "CHIP" to the Runner on your team............the "CHIP" records your times....yours and your fellow teamates' times and the transition times between the end of swim and beginning of bike, and end of bike, and beginning of the run...

20mph average, that is awesome! You are a beast! I ride a similar 11 mile flat out and back route and I finally broke 16mph average today. My goal is to get back to 20 (where I was 10 years ago and 20lbs lighter).

ya…I’m happy with the 19.5mph average considering my route has a bunch of turns, isn’t flat, and I have to do u-turns every 5 mile lap.

Do you have the elevation for that route?

Congratulations! I am at the same weight. I am biking and dieting mainly to keep under the weight limit of my wheels; the health improvement is only a side benefit.
