Mavic Wheels from the 80's: Change Hub Bearings?

I recently bought a Peugeot PX10 from 1984 with stock tubular Mavic Wheels (unknown model, doesn't say in the Peugeot Brochure). The bike is in overall great condition, and the wheels are true. However, they just don't spin/roll as fast or go as far as my even older Mavic Speciale Sport from the 70's, although I would guess that the Mavics on the Puegeot are of a better model. The tires on the two bikes are comparable.

I don't feel any noise or gristle from the hub in these wheels and there is no noticable resistance when i roll the wheels in my hand, but can the poorer rolling speed be attributed to the hub bearings? If so, I might try to do a change of bearings.

You’ll know when you pull them apart…I’m guessing…just clean, lube, adjust, and ride!

Ok, will try and find out. Any tips regarding a guide to pull apart the hubs and changing bearings for old Mavic Tubular Wheels?

Would any guide for cup and cone hubs do the work, such as this RJ The Bike Guy's guide (
) or is there anything else to think about regarding tubular Mavics in particular?

Your hubs do not appear to be Mavic, they look to be Suzie or such that are of cup and cone. If they are the RJ video should do you well.

True - not Mavic but Shimano.

Cheers,
Karl

@karldub - Inspect and repack and try again. If no improvement, then consider better hubs. I found the Mavic 50x series very nice.

Aren't that Peugeot's wheels built on sealed-bearing hubs?

I agree , those are identical to what is on my Medici and they roll like nothing else. I am good at adjusting the cone type bearings , but after I experienced those Mavic hubs , I am convinced they roll better. Down hills are a blast!! I was told by the bike shop mechanic that I trust , they rolled better after several "break in " miles . I don't know, mine must have been broken in when I got the bike.
