Part 2. USAC needs to make selection courses look a bit more like the worlds course. That was my other email to them. This year they are closer as in not selecting using Tahoe for Virginia.
The VERY good news is while in Dohar, they are mostly isolated and I think can be secured. A bunch of kids in Lycra racing trough open desert was not what some parents wanted.
As I look most at the junior TT https://www.dohacycling2016.com/event...al-time-trial/
vs https://s3.amazonaws.com/USACWeb/for...maps%20(2).pdf
Just that one of these is not like the others. I have not looked at altitudes yet. This is a good Brandon course.
The RR can be compared to the USAC RR in the PDF link above. At least they will be familiar with the course https://www.dohacycling2016.com/event/men-u23-road-race/

Interesting that they're taking Powless over Costa in the TT. Both are darn good TT'ers, but I just assumed Costa was the better of the two.

The course is completely flat.
I wonder why UCI allowed this. A RR should have a hill, don't you think? Another rule I need to look up.

Crosswinds and attrition can do their thing and that closing circuit looks really technical. Just because it's flat doesn't mean you get to sit on flicking boogers.

Too turney for crosswinds to matter. Not ever going the same direction very long

Eh ... i think there is enough variety year after year where we can have a flat WC course. No sprinter will ever win a Grand Tour. No pure climber will ever win Paris Roubaix. I like that profiles of the WC courses change and that there is room for a sprinting WC if that's how the race shakes out.
Location is blah, but I guess if it inspires some non cyclists Doha to ride a bike, then that's a win. Although incredibly unlikely.

Cipollini won his stripes on the Zolder racing circuit, very flat.
Moscow Olympics RR, perfectly flat.
Somebody gots to pay the bills for these races; WC's are expensive, and Doha has the money.

My course comment is more on how different it is from the Nationals Course we use to select at least the winner. If we had a few races that matched the world course and made them the selection races, we'd get better winning opportunities.
I've seen Brandon is very good in a TT on this type of course from Euro races. Don't know much else on who I'd favor. Likely big. Ian is 6'5 about. So in Phinney.

Yeah, I kept looking for your son on the list and thought you'd told the air force not to send him and they took as much input from you as they would when it comes time to assign him to whatever station he ends up.

If you look at the names on the junior list some are very new, other very strong riders are missing. I expect this list would have been different if the race were in USA again - before college started.
Adrian is enrolled in UCSC but I'm not tracking him this fall and he is auto qualified. Blevins started SLO this week and was auto qualified - so he turned it down. I've heard for worlds coach selection they want to pick kids they think are moving on in the sport (IMO - based on their, unpublished criteria for defining that).

The junior selection this year is very different. Could be the course, could be college, I think it is Dohar. I don't really want to post specifics as too close to all these kids. But you could put together a TTT of the kids not on the list (other than Brandon) and win nationals.
