Very sad news and a good reason to not “get into it” with motorists. Glad the perp got what he got.

I can't fathom what would compel someone (presumably in their right mind) to resort to this level of violence to "settle" some argument that was probably trivial to start with. Mr. Oliver was on the phone to the dispatcher so there was no immediate threat to Mr. Murray. What a mess.

Condolences to Mr. Oliver's family.

My initial thought too. Did he (Murray) think that he’d get away with shooting Oliver, and then the gunfight with the cops? OK...maybe he gets one or two cops. But then you’re the target of EVERY cop and a relentless manhunt.

I’ve been shot at twice in my life while riding a bike (hit once). The first time was with real bullets,3 or 4, and missed. Second time was with a pellet gun...hit, and still hurt like $hit, and the shooter was apprehended and ‘went away.’ I hope there’s not a third time.

unfortunately, in this country, you’re rolling the dice every time you interact with an irate motorist. Always better to suck it up and get home safe

The one thing that I will never really understand is what possesses a person to be that angry with someone else to kill them. I couldn't live with myself. I've got to believe that Mr. Murray, at age 62, is going to go to prison for either manslaughter or murder. So at that age his sentence could very likely mean that he dies in prison. Don't get me wrong, I have no sympathy for Mr. Murray. I just don't understand why a person would risk going to prison for the rest of his/her life over some minor personal argument.

When people become angry IQ points are rapidly lost. At the same time, there are many who have never learned impulse control. I find it amazing there are people will to commit murder over some minor issue risking a life in prison.

I think most people here know about the marshmellow test where children are presented with a treat right before them and then told if they resist eating the treat for some period of time, say 10 minutes, they will receive 5 additional treats. This test has been carried out many times I've read. It happens that the children who best show impulse control are from higher socio/economic households. Furthermore, these children go on to have better outcomes later in life. So clearly, impulse control is learned early in life.

Yes. Portsmouth, RI. The second time, when I was hit, was. Several years ago. As I was riding home from work on my commuter bike...on a side road...a car pulled along side and the passenger shot me in the side from just a couple feet away. I was only wearing a t-shirt so the pellet actually broke the skin and bled some. Obviously as they drove away I got the make, model, and plate number. I was only a block away from the police station so I stopped there to report it. They treated it as a felony. The shooter, a high school kid, was apprehended within an hour. It wasn’t his first offense. He went away to the state sheriff’s training school.

This is a local story to me. As of now, there has been no information released about what instigated the situation, but it has been reported that Murray had been an ongoing problem to locals for some time, and had been reported to police for harassing people several times previously.
A GoFundMe page for his family has been established: Fundraiser by Jennifer Barredo : Whit's Legacy (gofundme.com)

I posted to my local bike related groups. This is not a victim blame, as nothing here was worth murdering a person, but I told them to take the 30 seconds to swallow it. Live. Run a camera and call the cops after a person is gone. Whatever.

This hit home as I worked remote for a bit in 2018 and lived in that neighborhood and rode daily to work at Fluor down the street. I probably rode on the exact street at some point he was murdered on.

Depressing this is the state of our culture. Disagreements over driving, cycling, walking turns into murder.

Please try to take a deep breath out there. I need to take my own advice there. Please stay safe.

Unfit, poorly educated, middle-aged white males comprise the overwhelming majority of those who rage against cyclists. I wonder how many of those boxes this idiot checked when he was still wasting air.

I wonder where you obtained your data about the racial, age, educational and fitness characteristics of the overwhelming majority of those who rage against cyclists? I presume your "evidence" is anecdotal at best, which of course may be influenced by your own bias as well as influenced by where you are bicycling when you encountered "rage".

What if the bad guy of this specific incident did (or did not fit) the stereotype you have fabricated? What difference does it make?

I can't figure out after reading the article why people think the victim was arguing. The shooter was a maniac.

There are two kinds of people in the world: 1) People who like people, and have pleasant encounters with random people with whom they cross paths, without regard for the time they spend, and 2) People who detest the presence of others, who resent every second someone, or anyone, who causes a 15 second delay in their quest to reach a destination. I think it's caused by a virus or a hormone or something.
