Addiction 2022.3

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Does this fall into the category of wasting money? Kind of sweet.

Got the bivalent booster shot this afternoon. I hope to not feel doubly achey tomorrow, but time will tell.

The guy on Ebay with the 24" 1988 Schwinn Circuit frame and fork dropped his opening bid last night, so I set up a snipe and got it. Paid too much, IMO, but I can't think of any other way to get the correct fork with a long enough steerer for the 23" frame. The 23" has a complete Sante BB in good condition, which is nice. I washed it this morning and the next step was to polish the paint with Scratch-X. The frame came from Colorado, so although there are a LOT of chips in the paint I see no rust. I touched it up with the paint I used on the 22" Circuit.

Here's a pic of the frame as it is now...

The decals are looking slightly scabrous, especially the "SCHWINN" on the drive side of the seat tube. I MAY try to touch those up. Not decided yet. VeloCals does not have these, unfortunately.

Yes, I am still riding with Machka, although not as far as it was annually five years ago. But I am gradually returning to doing more and will hopefully tick over 3,000km this year (don't ask me what that is in miles, because we don't deal with miles in Australia, but getting close to 2,000 I think).

Our bike list hasn't changed at all, so we are still on the various bikes we were five years ago, including our ttitaniums and tourers. I still have a CF bike I am aiming to get to 10,000km total distance by the end of the year after the Hasa titanium gets to 15,000km. Disc brakes are rare among the 20-plus bikes we own, but Machka is keen on the idea of getting electronic shifters in her next bike, whenever that might be.

Strava continues to be our faithful recording system for all rides, and we even connect it with Zwift trainer resullts, although I am not a racer in that (and neither is she), but the TV images are great when using our old-fashioned trainer set-ups. I can even identify some of the spots we ride through because we have really been there in the past.

We are spending this weekend away at our favourite destination, and plan to do a ride up to 100km depending on the weather which is currently rainy. If the rain does persist, we will do a 50km ride tomorrow -- the 50s have been recognised by Audax and we have been doing one a month together for around three years. The 100 would be a breakthrough for me... the longest "50" was really about 73, so I am getting back there. And Machka has shown her incredible ride planning skills that originated in Canada by coming up with excellent routes that even help to minimise the dangers from other road users.

Anyway, I may drop in a bit more often to join the discussions.
Wow! A Rowan sighting! Good to see ya!

I recently started using Gold on my etap bike. For some reason it doesn't like the hot wax I had been using. It's satisfactory with r&r gold. I think I might need to change out the wax in my crock pot.

Low 80s here today. It feels wonderful, cool and comfortable. More than 20 degrees cooler than yesterday and the last 2 weeks. What a relief.

Evenepoel wouldn't even have the red jersey, if Jumbo Visma hadn't so cavalierly given up their 5 minute lead way back on stage 4? 5?. They thought they had it in the bag. They were toying with the peloton. He took the lead from the break a couple stages later, iirc.

Wimped out and got a room for the night in DuBois so I don’t have to pack up in the early morning rain before crossing the Alleghenies.

The 5 mile descent into Clearfield could be interesting. There is a sign at the top of the hill telling trucks to test their brakes.

Should be able to get home today around 3 pm, If the commuting Gods allow it. Come to think of it, it’s been awhile since I’ve made a sacrifice to the commuting Gods, probably should get on that.

I kind of hoping the wife will let me ride when I get home, however, If I plan on this than I won’t make it home. Best to leave these kinds of things open.

I need 50 miles to make my mind at peace, but I’ll take as low as 10. I’m not even going to bother looking at the leader board. Trainsnorter I imagine is winning.

I learned there was an “accident” on the century my friends rode yesterday, a rider was hit by a pickup and died. So sad. My friends did not see the incident but passed the site before the ambulance came. They said it was very disturbing.

Sorry to hear this. Do the roads you ride on have a bike lane and or shoulder?

I gave up on the week. Once I knew I wasn’t going to get over 100 decided it was a “rest week”

Still need to figure out how I’m going to make it work on weekdays when the kids are here.

I might actually ride today. Sunday and all. No trucks on the road. Only Sunday drivers, and they are pretty tame, generally.
I'm finally caught up on my other projects.

Was the rider a part of the group, like way off the front? Or did the group happen along the accident during the course of the ride?
