Anyone want to start an orphan wheel exchange thread?

Item #573 on the too doo list is to go through all the orphan wheels that I have loose or that came on the many mechanics specials I've brought home. I figured I'd post the list here to see if any one had any matching misfits. I've never made a spreadsheet in my life, but if some one else was interested enough to do the leg work, I could put add a dozen or so pretty easily... And a new thread was born: https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-v...omponents.html

This is an excellent idea. Local exchange is the only cost effective way unless it is something uber rare.

I think it’s a great idea, though shipping might dampen it a bit.

Yea.. with the nicer ones, I might ask for the hubs value. The rim and spokes are free with the price of shipping. I'd be excited to send off a bunch and maybe get a match or two out of the endeavor.

I have a few wheels with decent rims and hubs, but the spokes are the problem. Shipping wheels is always a problem (cost) , but shipping wheels with bad spokes kills it.

I'll play. There must be twenty or so orphans here. Most all are 700c with various better quality hubs rims are mostly clincher from Mavic and a few other name brands. I will have to compile a list of what is here, but I am just now back at work in coaching for the fall semester. It may take a few days. Smiles, MH

Probably some savings shipped broken down with a couple spokes to document the lengths. I've certainly got wheels that need to be broken down, to save a hub or rim.

I've got a few orphan wheels! Could be good! I'm on board for my small collection.

This has strong potential. Expanded to wheels AND/OR hubs and I think it’s a winner.

It looks like there's enough interest. I wont get a chance to start a list till next week, but should probably start a new thread. Any suggestions for a catchy title?

"Saint Agnes's home for wayward wheels and component's"?

I'm going to encourage interested folks with "a collection" maintain one post of "trade blanket" inventory and define a geographic range. Myself, I'm frequently between DC and NYC.

I wonder if the mods might sticky it with a few wheels. I had actually broached the topic several months ago with @Mad Honk since I had several wheels I would love to trade/pair.

The only issue would be equating value.

Examples of orphans I have
Superbe front/Mavic tubular front
Mavic Cosmic Elite rear
Sprint Unknown rear
Campy C Record with similar unknown rim front
Dura Ace M3 front.

Bumping this thread, I have an original Gitane tubular wheel set with a bad front wheel. I’m looking for an equivalent Mavic Montlery 36h wheel to swap out the bad one. I also have I think a Nisi? (Sticker is worn) rim in good shape w/out eyelets I can unlace if someone is looking for one.
