Transitioning from Garmin Edge 510 to 530 with multiple bikes
Please refer my other thread titled Multiple bikes on Garmin Edge dated 4/14/2022. This is a follow up to that thread. I just received a new 530 and haven't opened the box yet. I'd like to transfer all of my rides from the 510 to the 530 if possible.
Next is the strategy for multiple bikes. In my previous thread, several strategies were offered. I've been able to sync all of my 510 rides into Garmin Connect and then transferred to RideWithGPS. To be honest, I'm quite confused so far. Some say to use separate activities on the 530 for each bike. Others say to use gear for each bike in Garmin Connect and something similar in RWGPS. All of my activities in the old 510 are the same, but have separate bike profiles. None of the newer models have bike profiles, which I have to learn how to work around. Basically I want to track miles for each bike in RWGPS or Garmin Connect. This includes inputting a starting odometer reading for each bike as read from the 510 under Bike Profiles. Unsure how to do that?
Thanks in advance,
Steve

Why do you want to put the old historical rides you've already done into the 530? You already have them in Connect, right? I don't think they'll benefit you in any way being on the new hardware. It has finite storage capacity and still eventually overwrite them anyway.
You need to use the gear feature to track miles now. You can choose between doing it on Ride With, Connect, or both, but you need to set each bike up as a piece of gear in whichever platform you choose, and then assign them to rides going forward.

I'd hook the old GPS up to a computer with the handy USB cable. Download everything in the \Garmin\Activities file to a temporary directory on your computer. (Repeat for the memory chip if you added one.) Disconnect, hook up the new GPS, and move everything from the computer directory over to the new GPS, same location.

I dont think Bike Profile data (I.E. which bike used on a ride) ever went to Connect. It was info stored locally on the device only. On the newer series you can select a type of activity for an activity profile, such as road, or mountain, commuting, etc.... that data ports to Connect (but nit to RWGPS). I use the Ride With GPS gear data to log which bike Ive used on a ride and I edit the completed ride data in that program to keep track of bike usage.

On the old Garmin Edges, they did funny things when the memory filled up. I always copied my .fit files for my rides to my PC for safe keeping and deleted the rides on the device. And I still do.. However the newer Garmin Edges seem to have plenty of memory. But I don't know about bringing all your rides from 2013 to the present day to load up it's memory with. How much space do they currently take up?
All you have to do to find out is plug the USB cable into your computer and then use it's file browser to look in the /garmin/activity folder on the device. All those .fit files in there are your actual ride or activity files.
You can transfer, move, copy, delete all from the file browser. If you delete them using a MacBook's file browser, then make certain to empty your trash. Unless they've recently changed it, mac OS saves deleted files on the storage they were deleted from.
But also realize that if you've been viewing your rides on Garmin Connect, Stava or RideWithGPS, then they have already been uploaded, though they still remain on your device too.
I think you could set up separate profiles on your Edge for each bike. Then you might have a distance traveled or odometer for each. However I find that bike tracking and equipment tracking is much easier done on RideWithGPS, Strava or GarminConnect.

Thanks for the reply! I believe you also replied to my earlier thread last month. I need to set some sort of initial odometer reading in RWGPS, in my case about 1100 miles on my current favorite a recumbent trike. It's critical for me to continue to track my mileage for each bike even if the 530 doesn't. Does RWGPS read the activity name from Garmin Connect. Or do I manually set the gear in RWGPS each time I import a ride, I'm trying to grasp the procedure.

I edit my RWGPS completed rides, I indicate who I rode with, where exactly, weather, and under "What did you take on this trip" I indicate the bike name. I have all the bikes added under Gear in RWGPS, makes it useful to sort data when I want to find out how often I rode a bike, etc.....

I have a piece of "gear" set up in Garmin called "travel with bike." This lets me see how many miles I've done from my front door vs driving the bike somewhere. It can be an important distinction for me and a reminder to go have more fun sometimes. 🙂

I answered by own question. My solution is entirely in Garmin Connect. I defined two types of bikes under Gear, but still have 2 other bikes to enter. Then I did a painful update of nearly 100 rides in the last 6 months and assigned them to my recumbent trike, my current favorite. And under Gear totals for the trike, I have 1100 plus miles, roughly what my 510 odometer shows. It works, but was a lot of work.
For my other bikes, I plan to experiment with a one manual entry for each bike. It will contain the total miles from the odometer for each bike on the 510. Not going be that detailed on the other bikes. Then I'll eventual try solutions other than Garmin Connect. Ride With GPS and Strava are my first choices.
All of this is because Garmin abandoned bike profiles. This since this has been the case for several years, I'm simply catching up with the times...

They have a concept of default gear. If you set a bike as default for cycling, it will automatically be associated with every ride going forward. If you enter the bike, give it an old first used date, and make it default, Garmin will offer to automatically tag every ride you've done since then with it.
You have multiple bikes and don't want every ride associated with just one, but in this kind of situation it can be faster and easier to remove the ones you didn't use it for vs adding it to the ones you did.
