Goatlink instead of roadlink
I have seen a video on Youtube, where a guy uses a goatlink with a 2by-system, and it seems to work.
Specifications says roadlink for 2-by, and goat-link for 2-by. So if it works just as good, i just buy a goatlink for my 2by-build.
Anybody been there - done that? 😉
Its a grx400 and 2by up front, and i'am going to try either 42 or 46 cassette.

A goatlink is $25
A roadlink is $21
A goatlink is for shadow+ RDs.
A roadlink is for 'standard' RDs.
They are different products designed to fill different needs.

Would an 11-40 work better instead of the 11-42?

I would probably go with the SunRace 11-40t MX3 10 speed cassette mainly based on lighter weight (alloy big cogs). It's not much heavier than the Shimano HG-50 11-36t 10 speed cassette. It seems the 11-42t variety of cassettes are all much heavier. I would definitely give the 11-36t a try if you haven't already. The 30:36t low gear is the equivalent to running a 42:50t or a 38:46t on a 1x setup. I would also consider weight cutting on your bike which I found to be just as beneficial as lower gearing.

I've got a GRX 815 di2 RD running a 10-42 cassette with a RoadLink DM. I think you need either that, or the GoatLink for your GRX 400 - but it is not clear from the Wolf Tooth site what you need for that derailleur. Works well on my setup, which happens to be on a tandem with a 46/30 crank.

I'm running a HG-50 11-36t right now with the 2x GRX 46-30 chainrings. It works flawlessly at the RD's max chain wrap capacity of 41. With the SunRace 11-40t, I will be exceeding the chain wrap capacity by 4t, which makes me nervous. It was also suggested that I should get a longer chain, which I will also try.
My current easiest gear of 30:36 is sufficiently easy for me for everything except for some mountain passes that I want to attempt this summer. They go for a couple of miles at something like 12% average with 15% pitches on unsealed surface, which could be quite loose. If the new setup works, I might be able to get up there on the 30:40 gear. Then, I will have to worry about how I get back down from there...

Did you change the chain to a longer one when you went to RoadLink DM with your extra wide 11-42 cassette?

Mine was a brand new setup so I just made the chain the right length for that. Going up by 4 teeth in the rear should require a longer chain if the current isn’t too long for your 36.
