Cinelli hairnet

Damn impulse buys! This just arrived from Itialy, glad it got here as it seemed like a potential scam initially. I remember actually wearing one of these back in the day, oh the 80s......

That's cool that they are featured on postage stamps.

Interesting. Granted the "hair net" and "monkey hat" are before my time (I am mid 50's), at the California Eroica event, I see the cycling cap and modern helmets, but I cannot recall seeing a hair net. Maybe because it is the worst of both worlds? Anyway, perhaps monkey hats are in order.

I raced a lesser brand from Palo Alto Bike 1976. Standard joke in the peleton - we wore them so we could have an open casket ceremony. Vowed to myself to buy that brand new, goofy Bell Biker if I raced a second season. Decided to, bought it in March and always wore it so I'd be totally used to it for the hot, long late summer races. That November my Lambert fork broke. I'm here.

(I had trouble believing a helmet maker would come out and call their hardshell brand a "Skid Lid". That's what we called the hair nets.)

That said, cool helmet. Just don't expect it to do anything,

Skid Lid brand was almost worse than no helmet.
Those hairnets didn't do anything for big impacts, but they were kind of OK for minimizing road rash on your head.
The UCSF rule book said something like "helmets shall not be just straps of leather - there has to be some padding in there"... it was not exactly a high specification.
I never heard anyone call them a "crash hat" before this ad:

I keep planning to put my leather crafting skills to work and make one. It shouldn't be too hard.

Rode with one in the 70s after a concussion in an accident. Wouldn't likely have helped much but it was all that was available at the time. Fortunately never tested what protection it actually offered,

Oh, I was very aware of that. Those Skid Lids were as bad as the helmets our varsity hockey got for one season around 1970. Flimsy plastic with just a web inside. Previously we were using the "classic" harder shell 3 piece helmets with Styrofoam inside. Not good but a lot better. (I was spared our "skid lids" as I played goalie and wore the older style helmet with the wire cage mask that was looked down on by the hip kids in their molded fiberglass shell masks. They didn't like getting hit in the face. It hurt! I didn't care. Now, the pros all know what I knew then and all wear cages!)

anybody else who wants to make an impulse buy: I have an all-black (classic!) hairnet with the very Italian-sounding name "Lambertini", but tag says "made in Mexico".
Looks like it's "one-size-fits-YOU"

Perfect for your Windsor or Carabela Profesional "Cinelli"!

PM me and spare me having to make a separate post in the FS sub-forum...

Yes, of course. (Kraftwerk fan since Autobahn. I own every Kraftwerk LP and CD ever issued in the U.S. and a few European issues and all their box sets. Plus the blue, white, and red K'werk Tour de France cycling jersey.) Posted it because the image on the Czech stamp was the inspiration for that K'werk cover.

Yeah, Lambertini. They were a "made in Mexico" Italian-named company. I never knew what, if any, connection they had with the Old Country. I seem to recall that they made other stuff besides helmets, too. Shorts and tights, I think, and maybe jerseys. Possibly shoes and other stuff I am not remembering, but don't hold me to that. In my circles, Lambertini had a reputation for being good enough but not top drawer. I have no clue if that was a correct take or not, but it is was passed for received wisdom in the early to mid-1970s in my neck of the woods.

100% correct AFAIK, even if it's all hearsay (or hairspray)!

With the right hairspray (and enough hair) you don't even need a helmet.

I have only heard them referred to as a "brain basket" and at one time it was required in amateur races for participants.

I had a cheap vinyl knockoff of the hairnet. Wore it a few times before the strap cracked. Just as well. Wearing it always reminded me of Bill Dana's 1960s Jose Jimenez astronaut schtick on Ed Sullivan on other shows:

"I see you're wearing safety equipment. Is that your crash helmet?"

JJ: "Oh, I hope not."
