Broke a piece in the rear axle. Help identifying and course of action?

EDIT: Fixed. Thank you.

Hi. After repairing a flat, I had some difficulty replacing the rear axle, felt a give, and appear to have broken this barrel piece that is on the drive side of the bike. Can you tell me what it is, how much needs replaced, and how badly I screwed up? It's a 2020 Kona Honzo, Thanks.

Photos removed. Thanks again.

Is the end of the through axle broken or it that askew part a "cap"? Andy

The piece was seated in the larger ring. When I screwed the thru-axle in I had some resistance, applied some more grease, and tried again with a bit more force. Then I felt a give and that cap was pushed out, askew, partly on the thru-axle. I hope that explains it.

Not knowing the bike's specs I would wonder if the drop out (hanger it seems) is threaded. or is that the function of the end "cap". Does the front drop outs have a similar design? Andy

The front through-axle is a little different, as it has a lever rather than needing an allen key. Here are a couple photos from Kona's site showing how it's supposed to look. (https://www.konaworld.com/archive/2020/honzo.cfm). Thanks for helping.

Right side (when seated)

Left side.

Looks pretty simple. Thru axle threads into the piece that fell out. That piece is (supposed to be) held in by the set screw. I'm failing to see any mystery at all here.

Are there threads inside the piece that is askew? I think it's the nut your thru-axle is supposed to screw into. There appear to be bosses on the part that keep it from turning when it's in the other holder for it. So maybe unscrew the axle and then put it back in and lining up those things on the side that need lining up with the other piece. Then thread the axle back into it.

Might need to check threads for damage first. If it doesn't have threads, then ignore me as most do! <grin>

An explanation of what you did to fix it and maybe a photo is always useful to others who may have the same problem and the posters who offered advice would benefit too if they knew what the fix was.
