The Product Of A Charity Ride

I rode the 51 mile route on the Tour Da Parish yesterday. I spent the first 20 miles with a group. They pulled off at one of the food and water stations set up on the route, and I kept rolling. As is often the case when I am riding alone and traffic conditions permit, my mind began wandering. What makes for better mind wandering as I wind along the bayou flanked roads in south Louisiana than food? My mind landed on Gumbo. It's a staple of any self-respecting Louisianan's diet. Not that I'm self-respecting, as I did own a carbon fiber bike at one point, but you get the point.

My in-laws live part of the year in Santa Fe NM. They had recently returned to this area, and brought some incredible Hatch chilies with them. I have been cooking with them quite a bit lately. Well the thought of gumbo and hatch chili merged to spawn the thought of Mexican Gumbo. This morning I decided to throw some things together to make a Mexican gumbo.

I looked up tour da parish- that starts east of NO and on the east side of the river- I havent been in that area since college, but it seemed like there were 3 roads 20 years ago.
Where did the route take you?

Down all three of those roads! From St Bernard to DelaCroix, back up to the 4 way, then to Hopedale, back to Shell Beach, then back to St Bernard. Great roads for riding during an event, but otherwise, I stay off of them.

I did that ride , the one right before the Covid , so as the name suggests ride the parish I said ok I'll do it , all the while thinking it was like the old ride New Orleans years back , I got there with a mountain bike and snacks and drinks , cuz that's what ride N. O. Was , everybody crossed the intersection at the same time , anyway everybody was at their best with their road bikes Lol I had agreed to do it even though I hadn't been on my bike for a while , I figured I'd just hang back with the girls and have fun well there was none of that plus there was a slight breeze a little windy to boot but since there was two or Three different distances I chose the 35 miles and even then I had to cut the course I mighta done 25 , but nobody was counting but me , when I got back I put the tank back in my truck and went and Had a beer ,,,

The first 20 miles was pretty well hammer down. The rest of it, up until the 45 mile mark, was spirited. My legs got HEAVY for the last 5 miles. The jambalaya and cheetos were delicious.

Smoked Gouda cheese toast and leftover gumbo. Gumbo, as is often the case with things that have a lot of different ingredients, is better leftover.

The response was, "That Dutch Oven has obviously been damaged by metal utensils and by being used in an oven heated beyond the recommended temperatures, and so is not eligible for our warranty. But as a one-time courtesy, we'll send you a new one."

We already had some other Le Creuset stuff but now I'm really a customer for life.

I suspect there is some perspective distortion in the photo.
