Specialized Rockhopper - Help Dating

Need help dating this bicycle. I purchased this at a Garage Sale and cannot seem to find a picture of this same one on the internet. It is a steel frame so i am assuming it is a bit old. It does have deore gears and everything on this bike works flawlessly after quite a bit of lubricant. Any help dating would be appreciated. Also, the tires shown are there temporarily, I have some 1.5 slicks ordered so that I can use this bicycle around the neighborhood. Any comments on value also appreciated.

Purchase Price was $25

Can you post some better pics? Ones that show some of the components clearly. Judging from the black Deore and cantilever brakes I would say '92/93ish.

Catalogues | Specialized Archive | Retrobike

you'll have to search the catalogs yourself. i'm willing to type a sentence into google for you, but after that you have to put some phalange grease into it.
there's also a whole Rock Hopper thread to peruse: https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vi...ckhoppers.html

cheers!

Was era of LX was around '93.

Thanks! It does have comp on there. Also mentions direct drive. The paint on this is really nice. Goes from a burgundy to a sort of army green.

That's a great bike and looks to be in good shape. Although you did good at $25, they don't go for much used by and large. They're basically undervalued in the marketplace. Fixed up and ready to ride that bike is worth $125-$175.

wow! that's a pretty bike. mine is kind of purple at the fork fade to dark blue at the rear triangle. i really like that kind of greenish to burgundy. i got mine for free - someone wanted it out of their barn.
i use it for commuting and touring. dirt roads. some single track in a slow kind of way, since i converted it to drop bar.

Enjoy!

This is in great shape; enjoy the bike. It does beat the heck out of a huffy. You will want to overhaul the bike and soon (replace all the ball bearings and pack with new grease) plus replace any consumables (you are already replacing the tires but you may need to replace cables, cable housing, and chain). At that point, you'll basically have the bike as good as new and it will last you a long time.

My experience is a bit stronger, $200-$225

Bikes were much nicer looking then. Sort of like how cars were much better looking in the '50 and '60s.

That's a great all around bike these had great basic hard frames with nice paint and clean lines and the Black LX was about the nicest functionally of the component groups from the early 90's. It should make a great all around rider. I would agree on the dating being 92/93 and the value in nice ready to ride condition around $200 these bikes seem to be way undervalued in the current market considering there quality and performance.

Ready to Roll

Amazing what a new set of tires and a little TLC does for a bicycle.

Thanks for everyone's input.
