Yep, that's a tip I got many decades ago from a mechanic to increase the "grip" or purchase of screwdriver tips on partly mangled screws (Phillips especially). If you don't have the lapping compound just some dry silicon carbide or carborundum powder does it too.

And if you have abrasive powder and mix a little with a dab of grease, viola' , lapping compound.
