What are these things? Wire cage over tires.
Hello Friends. I am restoring a 1985 Dave Scott Centurion, everything but the stem looks to be original and so far the parts are in great shape. The bike came with these wire things over both tires--any idea what they are and what purpose they served?

Tire savers....to keep debris off of tires that may cause a puncture. Sometimes they work other times.....

AKA glass catchers, nail pullers ... Common around the non-racing sewup crowd of the 1970s. Make a mess of the bike, especially on one's without fenders and installing with fenders was its own challenge, but they do save a good percentage of flats and at the sewup cost to weekly paycheck ratio for many 50 years ago, worthwhile. (Also provided the "oops. I just ran over glass" tire wipe that is impossible for most of us using fenders.)

if set to skim the surface of the tyre, they were able to flick the flint or glass before the tyre rotated and caused the flint or glass to be embedded on further rotations.

I remember when i was a kid, my very old neighbor's bike had those. His bike was the one with very large wheels and he stands on the left side with his left foot on the pedal, while he uses his right foot to scoot the bike to take off, then he sits on the saddle. It has "foot brake" too...

Thumb print savers. I would "glove" the tires on my bike whenever I rode thru broken glass. Unfortunately on one occasion I went to glove the front tire, palm just in front of brake, and my thumb got sucked up from behind the fork and under the fork crown pinned between tire and crown. Left hand went to front brake lever, an ackward move seeing as my other thumb was stuck. Slowly came to a stop. Smell of burning flesh. My thumb was black and bleeding. Hurt like hell. I was 7-8 miles from home. Brutal ride home. No finger print on my thumb anymore.
