Bernard Hinault.....

was so good it is frightening. Why? Heres a snapshot.
  • 77 Liege-Bastonge-Liege - gets pissed off with press, announces win in advance, pwns peloton.
  • 77 Dauphine - crashes off cliff, gets back on bike, pwns peloton
  • 79 Lombardy - gets pissed off with Italians, announces win in advance, pwns peloton except for Contini, who can only follow for 100km and finishes with cramps.
  • 80 Liege-Bastonge-Liege - wins by nearly ten minutes in blizzard
  • 80 Worlds. Announces win in advance, rides whole peloton off his wheel, wins.
  • 81 Paris Roubaix - Announces win in advance, falls off 7 times, still wins.
  • 81 Worlds. Misses break containing best riders on planet, rides across 1.5minute gap, gets beaten by fastest sprinter on planet by only half a wheel.
  • 85 Tour. Pwns everyone by 2.5minutes and more in first TT, smashes face in late in Tour, still wins.
  • Tour of Sweden circa 1985. Russian national team starts eschelon in roaring crosswind. Hinault can't be arsed racing so rides up the windward side of the the eschelon bent over with his hands behind his back, looks at Russians and grins. Russians sh1t themselves and go and hide in peloton.

At the risk of being labeled Forever Fred, does 'pwns' mean exactly?

Yes Hinault was frightening. AND French matinee idol looks to boot.

pwns = owns... someone in a computer game one day bumped 'p' instead of 'o' and then tried to play it off as on purpose, and it stuck...

By badgering his own team mate and having his DS lie to get Lemond to slow down.

That's ONE that, by all rights, Hinault should have lost.

Nonsense and rubbish. Myths perpetrated by the Lemond camp. What was Koechli going to do? Let Lemond ride away with Roche and risk both first and second place overall? Hinault had nothing to do with it. In any case, Lemond was only within spitting distance of the lead because Hinault let him jump away on the day he crashed at St Ettienne.

Hinault was the best rider in the race by far and without his accident would have won by more.

I like LeMond, but Hinault was the strongest in '85, and maybe 86 as well. I think LeMond only beat him in 1 TT in all the Tours they raced together. The only reason LeMond won in '86 was because Hinault's suicidal solo breakaway on a stage with 3 HC climbs.

Supposedly after Hinault blew up, Alexi Grewal passed him, leaned over, and said, "You blew it Bernie; you f***ed up."

You idiot. Weren't you quoting Cyrille Guimard at one stage?

Guimard commented in Cyclesport recently that he has come across four exceptional talents in his career. Hinault, Lemond, Fignon and new kid on the block Andy Schleck. Then he went on to say that no, Hinault was on a pedestal and had way more talent than the others.

When Hinault speaks, Chuck Norris listens.

Guimard > DeGribaldy.

Thats a picture of Kelly and the Viscount discussing how they are going to sell the 86 Tour of Lombardy to Gianbattista Baronchelli.

I was cleaning out my storage locker recently and found an old jersey signed by the King himself. Set that one aside in the "keep it" pile.

If its a team Kelly rode for I'd damn near go and get it framed and hang it on the wall.
