If black fits your color scheme silicone Fuse Tape is an affordable alternative to expensive bike specific tapes. Not sticky but it will fuse to itself after a day of bonding at each overlapping wrap on the bar. A tidy, long lasting installation. No need for additional closure tape at start of the wrap. Only $4.98 at Home Depot.

Then it just becomes gray. Never seen any white tape or grips that could be made anything close to white again.

Nope. Silicone fusion tape is different from electrical tape. No adhesive. It fuses to itself without adhesive. Waterproof and can even be applied to wet items. Way better.

Why don't you just use dirt-colored tape? And paint your bike brown? Do you ever clean your bike? Cleaning bars takes a fraction of the time that you would to clean your chain. Do you clean your chain? Do you know what size your bike is?

What a novel idea!
When it becomes dirty enough, yes, but I'm not OCD about it.
Other than re-lubing and wiping it down, no.
Where did this come out of?

moving target
white tape i always thought was more of a status symbol indicating you had the funds and time to replace your tape often enough to keep it shiny white, i normally wrap red and most of the dirt and damage that my tape receives is really from leaning my bike against things while out in the world.

That's not sweat stains. You can't dye leather white, so white leather is actually painted white. The paint wears off where it's rubbed by my ginormous guads. Where my arse sits, it's still white.

It's still a good enough reason why one wouldn't want a white saddle. Ginormous quads noted.

White tape, saddle, hoods, cables, toe straps, bottles…yep, definitely works for me.

It does take years, however. I built that bike up with that saddle in 2007 and it was my go-to bike for 13 years. I tried a couple other white saddles to replace it, but they didn't work for me. And I figure when I'm on it, nobody can see the worn patches anyhow.

My son could probably restore it to like new. He likes modifying sneakers including leather ones and has the special paint.

Is it the same stuff they used to sell for nurses, who used to wear white shoes, back when they wore white uniforms and those funny little hats?

I don’t know. It’s from a company called “Angelus.” He knows how to apply it without brush strokes. He repaired one of my saddles with scuffed up corners.
