New Bike

Hello all,

After spending about 45 minutes at a local Trek dealer today I’ve narrowed down my favorite model.

Being 5’ 10” I figured I would fit on a Large frame for the Trek models. It turns out the Medium was the better fit. Just a heads up that the sizing can be deceiving until you actually try the bikes.

i tried an FX 1, Marlin 4, and a Verve Disc 1. The Verve was by far the most comfortable for me and what I’ll be picking up tomorrow. I really didn’t like being so high in the air.

After using a cheap Walmart Roadmaster the last couple years this is like riding on magic. Amazing!

Thanks everyone for the endless threads for research. I’ve learned a lot.

Congratulations! You're fortunate to have had the opportunity to actually ride several bikes prior to buying. Great choice btw. Enjoy your ride!

I'm around the same height and thought I was destined for the large but after riding both the medium was much more comfortable.

The inseam was a better gauge for frame size I found. No idea why I didn’t notice it at first.

I'm not in the market for a new bike, but you might want to post where you found new bikes to try, as several have stated they are looking for a new bike, but none are available at their dealers. Congrats on finding a new bike and have fun on ii! Agree with sizing-hard to judge until you actually sit on a bike.

Thanks, wouldn't be surprised if they got a few calls from riders seeing this, and doesn't mind a drive (if it's not cross country!).

Brought it home finally.

I used it with the bike trailer and my one year old. I haven’t ridden since last fall and this ride was effortless. Amazing what a quality bike can do.

My wife and I just purchased 2021 Trek Verve 3's last weekend in Davenport, Iowa. Picking them up next weekend at Jerry and Sparky's Bike Shop with accessories installed and tubeless tires set up. The Trek Store in Davenport, Iowa also had all the versions in stock (1, 3 & 3).

I road trails on a Gary Fisher full suspension throughout my 30s, now 52, but quit due to the chiropractic costs riding over logs and pot holes was causing me, lol. I really like the geometry of this bike at my current age and we hope to ride a lot of rail trails locally and in neighboring Wisconsin this year.

I'll let you know how we like them after our first ride.

Here it is finally.

I haven't decided if the saddle is going to be comfortable yet long term, but I'll give it another month before I know for sure. The Bontrager Boulevard saddle was a lot more comfortable than what came on the FX 1 or Marlin 4. I was using a Schwinn extra wide saddle on my old bike and it was perfect. I sold it with that saddle so I have to start over unfortunately. I sold the old bike within 12 hours of posting which is amazing.

Thanks! This is my first quality bike.

I had a cheap bmx as a kid, and then the recent $100 Walmart Mountain Bike. It's no joke you get what you pay for in the cycling industry.

I'm around the same height. Does the store let you bike around inside the store?
Does the Verve have good shocks?

I have a Electra Townie and regret the townie doesn't have shocks. So I feel every bump in the sidewalk alot more than my cheap walmart bike.

The Verve has no suspension, but the tires are 45 wide so they give quite a bit of comfort when going over bumps. It won’t be a mountain bike type comfort but it does the job. You could always put a spring saddle on or get the widest tires the frame will allow. The FX 1 tires were 35 wide and you could feel everything with that bike.

I rode around in the parking lot and street near the store. I’m sure I could of ridden much further if I wanted but I already knew that was my favorite. You just know I guess.

It’s the Bontrager. Costs $20 and they put it on when I bought the bike. It’s worked great so far.
