I think you're looking at the wrong hobbies. The ones you cite are all collecting hobbies. Cycling is a sport, though there are a relatively small number of people who collect bicycles.

Cripes, that reminds me of the discussion/argument I got into about cutting down and rethreading a fork from a 24" frame to fit a 23" frame, and I was told I should leave it long so the next guy doesn't have to find a low-stack headset. Sheesh.

I've given away some of my old bikes. Sold some cheap and disposed of broken frames and gave away the parts, except one I stripped for the new frame.
I've had about 30 cars. Some of them I bought to have fun with and sold them cheap just to get rid of them. It was a hobby until I got sick of cars.

Everything we spend money on doesn't have to be a calculated, dry, emotionless thing. I never made a lot of money working as a car mechanic but when I bought project cars, or dirt bikes, or bicycles I never considered how much I could sell them for, except one of the cars I thought I could make a buck on.

I buy those things because I want to have them. When I'm done with them I get rid of them.

As I posted, I'm sure geometry has something to do with it. But when I stand next to my Landshark and push down on the pedal and the whole frame BENDS away from me, that's not the geometry. Try the same thing on my Tesch and the frame does not budge, the only thing that deflects is the wheels.

If I can deflect the frame inches by pushing it laterally, maybe there is a bit of that going on in the vertical plane, as well.

A bicycle in not a financial investment. I don't purchase bicycles with the intention of reselling them for profit or reselling them for any other reason... I purchase bicycles for the purpose of riding and enjoyment and I like to keep them for as long as possible.

I still own the last new bicycle I purchased 48 years ago.

There are still some fair deals on new bicycles. For example, Soma has some great deals on new frame sets. Jamis bicycles offer great value. There are many others. Ride it for a long time and get your money’s worth.

Rivendell frames are a more expensive, but still offer good value.

I would not say that. There are some fair deals in new bicycles for those who plan to ride them for a long time and get their money’s worth.

A $5,000 markup to the dealer, and another $5,000 markup to the end user on a bicycle is just foolishness.

Y'all are so cute ... being so earnest and rational in a thread which was dishonest and irrational from the original post.

Just keep me laughing, folks ... that's all I ask .....

All irrelevant. You are not the arbiter of whether or not someone gets their money's worth out of a bicycle. I would not get my money's worth out of a Rivendell, even if it only cost $100, because I would never ride it.

Not at all. It’s just that the more a bicycle rises over $5,000 the more skeptical I become. At $14,000, I can’t keep from laughing.

wise guy

A wise friend of mine seems to be a very lucky guy and never worries. He used to say , what ever floats your boat. I kind of agree now.
In this case the proverb would be, what ever spins your wheels.
