Just a thought: If you are willing to loosen and re-adjust upon arrival, you could loosen the stem, then turn the bars and fork 180 degrees during transport. That way the rear triangle and bars wouldn't be quite as exposed. I could understand not wanting to do that too often, but might be worth the trouble for a long trip.
That's a good idea gaucho777. I just tried that, but it won't work without removing the rear chainsets on both sides. The rack cradle hits the chainrings, not allowing the tandem to slide back far enough to get the fork in the rack.
I probably won't do it.. This is a one time deal(hauling the tandem on this vehicle). If I did plan on hauling it again with her car, I would have an smaller aluminum rack welded up for the tandem. After this trip, it's going back on the roof of the wagon.
Thanks for the input.

Just the Sidewinder tandem mount is from Yakima. I used to have one of their old tandem mounts, without the swing out feature. It would be better for this application, cutting a few more inches off the length. Unfortunately I sold it years ago.
Just for reference and for those questioning the width, here's some pictures of it mounted.

Once again, I have been working on my Orbea Avant, 5700 groupset but FSA Omega crank set/bb86. I bought it new in 2016, 2014 model, and it has never functioned that well since I first got it. Shifting has always been iffy and the drivetrain/bike has always been noisy. Recently, I have replaced cables/housing, replaced the chain, switched to Shimano chain rings. pulled and re-mounted the bb, played around a bit with the B-screw and cable adjustments, installed a new cassette, adjusted the mechanical disc brakes and did a deep clean and lubrication.
I took the bike out for a ride the past two days and it is operating better and quieter than in the past. I actually really enjoyed the rides. Yesterday i switched tires to Hutchinson Fusion storm, 28mm with latex tubes, and that has helped to smooth out the ride and dampen noise a bit more. I just received a Shimano PF BB for hollowtech ll cranks and am going to install an almost new Tiagra 4600, 48/34 , crank set on it. I am hoping that will quiet the drivetrain more, and maybe make the shifting crisper. I already have the crankset and have never cared for the FSA set up.
I will probably get the crank set done tomorrow. If I notice more improvement, as I am hoping for, I could wind up really liking this bike and having to re-evaluate my bike priorities. I would like that as it would remove the disappointment I have felt with the bike/components. I have always really like the aesthetics of the bike, good performance to go with it will make it a bike I want to ride.

Well,
I’m attaching some pics of this Peugeot that I was gifted. Got it’s first bath in 30 years. Generally, bike will have to be completely taken apart and painted, polished, new decals, new grease, cables, chain, seat, bar tape, hoods, etc. Found out that the bike is actually a 1985 model PH10LE …
Good news …. Was stored inside so only surface rust. Frame is straight w/no dents, cracks, scrapes, or gouges … not abused/intact, seat stem not stuck … haven’t tried the head stem yet.
News … front fork is bent. But, I can find a replacement on eBay- maybe a chrome one …

Trek frame from @Paul J. Built with 105 takeoff from my build of my 83 Pro-tour. Too tall for me but should work as a thank you gift for my friend Dave, who just stepped down as my director.

I spend the last two days rebuilding the wheels on my Austro Daimler. Previously I had some old dark Trek touring rims.
The new rims are Sunrims M13II, and have a bit more bling.

New sealed bearing jockey wheels for the Galli derailleur on the Olmo. The originals were cracked when I got the bike so I replaced them with Suntours. The Suntour jockey wheels eventually showed a lot of wear, and a surprising amount of friction was noticeable when backpedaling in the workstand. The Meroca brand jockey wheels from eBay fit 6mm bolts and included a bushing for 5mm bolts.I added shims on each side to keep the cage width close to original. Going from 10 tooth to 11 tooth left just enough room for the chain to run between them and clears the 28 tooth freewheel cog. Quiet and smooth after 100+ miles.

I built a new set of wheels for my Super Course after the Craigslist specials started popping spokes.
These CR-18’s are cheap and cheerful! They feel like... wheels. Nothing too exciting. The seams are pretty pronounced, but what do you expect for $32! They brake well.
I considered replacing the black, plastic fenders with some silver VO’s that I have, but with all this toe overlap, I think I prefer metal on plastic. Looking forward to getting back on this bike!

Just finished up this Windsor Mixte. Not super high end, but still finished off real well. Fun bikes. I kinda like the reverse pull Suntour Spirt FD.

My 83 Le Tour is one of the 4130 frames, so it's not too heavy. I did finally get enough of the 42/52 Chainrings climbing a hill recently.
So, I went from Shimano Altus, to Suntour derailleurs and shifters.
Old,
New, ARX FD, Cyclone GT RD, 48,38,28 Triple chainrings on Sugino VP cranks
To finish up I switched to Power shift,
Uphill is better now..

Two big things have happened for me recently .
First, a local bike shop that the Bike Exchange has had a long relationship with recently lost their lease and had to relocate. They had a large storage space crammed with high end vintage bikes and gear ,We're talking about a small supermarket sized building where instead of lettuce on Isle 3 you found boxes of Campi parts , stacks of rims , and all manor of other bicycle stuff. They tried to sell it all as one lot but failed. Instead they gave most of it to the Bike Exchange. I went over and cruised the isles , picking up saddles, Crank sets, brakes, pedals, what ever I thought I could use for my restorations, filling a large Rubbermaid tote. Then I returned along with another guy from the shop and cleaned out the rest of the shelves. In all we hauled off at least 4 truckloads of smalls worth thousands.
And there's more.
Today , our shop had a bike sale. We haven't had one for about 2 years due to the pandemic and our shop was packed to the ceiling with bikes and parts. About a dozen of us got there at 8:30 and put out maybe 100 bikes and frames plus at least 6 tables of bags, shoes, jerseys, wheels, derailleurs and more. when we opened to the public at ten we were mobbed , with the line at the cashier 50 people deep at least. Between then and 2 pm we sold almost all our bikes and a lot of other merch. when all was finished we tallied up the receipts which totaled 30 thousand dollars. This has been our best sale ever. We still have lots of bikes awaiting final inspection and hundreds more that haven't been worked on but the sale has cleared some space and we were able to sell some great bikes to folks that really appreciated them and us.
