Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How'd you do in your first race?

So i did my first race today and i sucked so bad. Im not trying to make excuses or anything but this whole week my legs have been so fatigued. I don't know why, It frustrates me. So back to the race. While i was racing i was pulling for 2 laps but then i started to feel my legs on the inclines. And when the riders started to move up one by one physically i started to feel the lactic acid build up more and more. So eventually i got dropped. I tried pretty hard to pull them back in but my legs said no but my mind said go. But my legs took over. I should have just drafted. But it was my first race, i need more experiences. How did you guys or gals do?

I'm still trying to finish it. j/k but yeah, most people go off the back. It took a few races before I was willing to consider taking pulls.

I crashed! It was pouring rain and I was attempting to bridge to a two man break. I took a little too many chances in the corners, and on one the tire slid out on the wet pavement and I went down. Thankfully, I was all alone so no one else was involved. Would have kept going, but my bars were badly twisted.

My training buddy, one of the two up the road, took second.

Dropped on my first race. Learned that day that it's better to ride towards the front.

I did my first race today.

11th out of 97 and 2nd in my age group. I lost my age group by a second and a half. I also threw up at the finish line, it felt great though. I definitely have the racing bug.

The best part of the race was the guy on the mountain bike who beat the guy on the time trial bike.

My first race was the day after a late, intoxicated night following my totally serious gangsta rap duo's first gig. Short, flat crit, got 24th out of 50. Not horrible under the circumstances.

Circuit race. Started in the back. On the 2nd lap had to slow to avoid a crash...into a nasty headwind trying to catch the pack. Didnt happen. Got lapped. 41st of 50. The next weekend another circuit race, pack finish.

Shouldnt this be in the racing forum?

I won my first race.

It sounds more impressive than the reality. It was an age graded Cat 5 ITT. I won it on my road bike without aerobars, TT helmet, shoe covers, etc. The only aero things that I did were to remove the bottle cages and not wear gloves.

It was a short 20 mile loop in Oswego NY, it's mostly publicized as a running race but the cycling portion was pretty good. Talking to some of the guys after the race they said it was a strong Cat 4 pace. The break finished in 50 minutes while the second lead group (which I was in) finished in 52 minutes. It wasn't super hilly but it was definitely not flat.

My first race was a time trial and I raced in public, the low turn out for public category got me first place.

My first real race was a road race, I got dropped and came in something like third or fourth to last. Pretty quickly though I got some top 20 finishes but never broke top 10 yet.

LOL!,since I'm already hear and got the golf clap going on-1st T/T middle of the road 20ish for age group
1st road race was on a tandem with my bro 5 miles into it we did a solo break away and road solo for the next 60miles.(not exactly what I had in mind)
1st crit was a 40's+ masters race that I thought would never end,but knew I would never hear the end if i DNF'd-finished mid pack.

not really, but then again, most of the pannekoeken in the éénenveertig wouldn't dare venture north.

How can you do a road race on a tandem? Was everyone else on one too?

First was a cat 4 road race...had no idea at all what to do or what I was doing. Probably with two miles or so left I found myself in first place...leading the field of approx 60 riders...I thought I was great...This lasted perhaps almost a mile? Once I started slowing the field went around me like I was a rock mid stream...suddenly found myself with no legs and my tongue dragging the pavement with several hundred meters to do...finished in the back but learned a very valuable lesson about when to lead and especially when no to hehehe.

Finished second a few years later in the Vets group of 70 or so...solo chase after the eventual winner...vindication lol.

March 1, 2008. First ever race: 8th place in a prologue-length, no aero equipment ITT. I didn't know where the finish line was!

First ever mass start race, later that afternoon: 10th place in a crit. I didn't sprint. I didn't realize we were on the bell lap!

It took me until this July to get dropped off the back of a crit. And then I managed it a second time. Good times.

"How can you do a road race on a tandem?"
" Was everyone else on one too? "

Apparently you have never ridden one? it's really quite easy!
Mass start-yes, Only tandem,no -fastest time of the day -yes!
